I live in the New Forest UK National Park and it is a stunningly beautiful place, but I hadn’t realised that it can also be a potentially quite dangerous landscape too. There are bogs and mires throughout the New Forest – the ponies and other animals are clever enough to mainly avoid them. We were not, as we nearly found out to our cost this weekend.

A tabloid may have described our weekend walk as “A New Forest bog ate my son!” especially if a celebrity

was involved. However, although we didn’t have the latest front page celebrity from a glossy magazine in our midst, we did end up quite scared – once we’d stopped falling about laughing.

We set off on our walk across the heathland with my son a strapping 28yr old, six foot two chap, his friend Micheal, my husband and our lovely dog.

We headed down into a deep valley and spent quite a lot of time watching the New Forest ponies and cows enjoying the day in these beautiful surroundings. The stream which ran through the valley was very shallow, but occasionally the dog could have a little swim. We hopped about and took some lovely photos of turquoise, iridescent damsel flies.

We also found the Sundew plant which is a carnivorous bog plant found in the New Forest which is very like the Venus Fly Trap. It lives by the side of a brook and devours any insect which lands on it.

Thank heaven we didn’t walk near a six foot Sundew plant or my poor son might have been a tasty meal!

Along we ambled and my son was in front of Micheal and myself, just a few feet away. We could see we were coming up to a bog patch as the land was draining into the brook ahead of us. The crossing was only about three feet and we all knew we could easily just hop across it.

My son hopped over first, and Micheal and I took no notice of what happened next as we were too busy chatting.

Before our eyes he just dropped at least 3 feet into this quite innocent looking New Forest bog – up to his waist in fetid, brown, bog goo.

The shock was tremendous – he later said he felt like Dawn French in a comedy sketch we once saw. He literally was sucked into mud and water up to his groin!

Micheal and I, once we got used to not seeing him at our eye height, absolutely fell about. Here was this squirming six footer at our feet trying to get out of a bog! I don’t think we could really take it in, and as he is always mucking about, we thought it was some kind of a joke – well if it wasn’t you in the bog it was hilarious!

He flayed about and managed to drag himself out onto the edge of the bog and then the next part of our New Forest bog adventure started – the awful smell. He had obviously disturbed hundreds of years of bogland silt, peat and rotting debris and most of it was stuck to his jeans and wellies – we didn’t know a walk in the New Forest meant donning deep sea waders.

He had a token strand of long grass hanging off each wellie and was totally coated in a thick, pungent, brown bog goo. He stunk! We made our way back to the car and had to turn the dog out of the boot as there was only one place for this New Forest bog man to ride and that was in the boot!

Once we got home he was hosed down in the garden and felt much better after a hot shower (the second of the day).

We all eventually stopped laughing and when we had time to reflect we realised just how dangerous the New Forest bog walk could have been. There was no indication the ground was so unsafe, or that someone would slip so quickly to such a depth.

Earlier in the week I’d been to the New Forest Show and spoken to Hants Fire & Rescue staff who had shown me photos of some of the rescues they get up to. They said that generally the New Forest ponies and cows and other animals are pretty aware of where the dangerous bog or mire areas are on the New Forest, and usually manage to avoid them safely.

So, if you are out and about in the New Forest, please take care. Luckily we all lived to look back and laugh at it – this time.

Recent surveys have revealed that the millennial generation are keen to work for ethical companies. A talented song writer, rapper and author Mark Andrew Dowling never forgot about his Stockport roots. He has had so many things happen to him over the past few years, but the determination to never give up is what makes Mark a rapper that you must follow and support.

Mark had a child that was taken away into the UKs care system, something that he covers in his rap songs on his You Tube channel. In-fact, Mark aka D-BO UK has been in and out of prison and has not been shy to rap about the experiences that he has been through. Once being arrested for a crime he didn’t commit! and many, unjust things happening to him makes this Stockport born artist someone to be reckoned with. He is all about reforming, coming off the streets and getting out of the life of crime that many ex inmates find themselves forced to be in.

He has mental health issues that many are shy to discuss with others. Mark is not! PTSD as a result of a stabbing, adult autism and many other issues have been thrown at Mark. Many men that find themselves in the UKs prison system have found themselves there as a result of system failures, men with mental health issues simply do not get the help they need.

He hasn’t taken out his violin this time. In-fact, currently based in a hostel, Mark is working from there selling his book! He is determined not to give up on life and to make the best out of a bad situation. He is also looking for charities to give back to the local community and has been doing a lot of outreach work to try to get help for men that he lives with in the hostel. Many inmates that have been released to hostels have not had contact with their families for months, having been banged up in covid19 without prison visits. Ask just about anybody and they’ll tell you that it’s not easy being in business right now. As the global economy climbs out of one recession and looks poised to enter another, businesses everywhere are struggling to get their foot on the gas and really accelerate growth. It’s a situation that isn’t aided by instability throughout Europe and East Asia, but has it affected the number of company insolvencies in the United Kingdom? Let’s take a look at the numbers for England and Wales.

Firstly, it’s important to note that the Office for National Statistics recently published a revision to their numbers following a human error which meant the figures were incorrectly tabulated. For this analysis, we’ll be using their (seasonally adjusted) updated figures, pulled from the Insolvency Service and Companies House.

Looking back to 2007 (the first full year the Government is offering information on) we can see that in England and Wales, there were a total of 15,866 company insolvencies throughout the year. That’s 92 more than they previously published, but it represents a significant low for company insolvencies in the near-decade that has followed. 2007 was the last year before the global financial crash of 2008, and that’s reflected in the figures.

As the global economy shrank, a total of 21,072 businesses were forced into insolvency – a shocking leap from the previous year. Things only got worse in 2009, as they leaped once again to 24,010 as businesses that had held on through the initial year of the recession finally collapsed under its weight. From there though, we witness a period of relative improvement in the number of insolvencies. 2011 brought a drop to 19,796, which was followed in 2011 by a small rise to 20,285 before falling to 19,350 in 2013, 17,681 in 2013 and then to 16,317 in 2014.

For 2015, the Government are only supplying the first two quarters, though the numbers look extremely promising given – besting even the pre-recession numbers. For Q1, the UK registered 3,837 company insolvencies compared to 3,933 in Q1 of 2007. Q2 is a similar story, with 3,701 businesses entering insolvency compared to 3,987 seen over the same period in 2007.

So, the data available to us indicates a steady fall in the number of insolvencies throughout England and Wales following the global recession. It’s clear, therefore, that company insolvencies aren’t increasing. They are, however, subject to the whims of the economy, and so are liable to increase with any sudden downwards shifts.

The UK Carbon Reduction Commitment may sound fairly innocuous yet it represents legislation with some fairly significant and sharp teeth. The Department for Energy and Climate Change is quite serious about the implementation of this new law and there are hefty penalties ahead for those who, either way, do not fully understand or do not fully comply with its requirements.

Over the last few years there has been a lot of activity as part of a rush to address the issues of global warming and climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions must be curtailed, it is reasoned, or significant additional harm will be caused to our overall environment, impacting all forms of life on the planet.

The UK Carbon Reduction Commitment is a British based initiative, which is anticipated to provide a model for the rest of the world. The US Environmental Protection Agency announced shortly after introduction by the UK Department that they plan to introduce a similar scheme.

The new laws set out to ensure that the greenhouse gas reduction targets established by the Climate Change Act are adhered to. The Commitment establishes an auction-based emissions trading scheme and its reach is mandatory.

Many commercial enterprises within the UK seem somewhat confused. It is estimated that 20,000 UK firms will have to submit an information disclosure and a significant portion will have to pay fees and participate in full by the summer of 2010. As such, to avoid hefty penalties, all enterprises within the United Kingdom should consider whether they are are affected by these new regulations.

The government requires that it be notified by eligible businesses about their energy consumption needs and it will be necessary to buy credits from the government to cover anticipated requirements. This process will take place on an annual basis. For each credit that is purchased, one credit will be lost per tonne of greenhouse gases admitted through the enterprise’s use of energy. It will be possible to trade the company’s unused credits to other participants in the scheme or to put them into a “bank” for future use.

All participants are encouraged to demonstrate a saving in their energy consumption and will be eligible for a cash bonus provided by the government should they do so. Either way, performance records will be made available in a highly publicized set of reports. The entire concept is expected to be “revenue neutral” to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the British government’s revenue chief.

Companies, charities and government bodies should sit up and take notice to see whether they are affected by these regulations. Even though the full details of the regulations are still not 100% clear, each enterprise should immediately determine whether they are affected, whether they must participate and then should start to prepare for the collection of necessary information.

The UK government is fully committed and intends to ensure that the business world is similarly engaged.
