Or maybe something like swimming or tennis would suit them better. Your child obviously has to enjoy the activities that he or she chooses, or there will be no interest or effort put in and the time and monetary layout will be wasted.

In the child’s early developmental years, this is essential. Training to Positive Failure Verses Absolute Failure, What is the Difference?

Positive failure is an oxymoron term if ever there was one. When I bring this up with a new client they give me a funny look, as failure in most instances is seen as a negative thing. Only in the crazy world of bodybuilding could failure be a positive, sometimes I forget this given the amount of time I have been moving the iron.

But it is true, failure in a working set lets you know where you are strength wise as well as letting you know you have worked your muscles to a point where they failed, being temporarily unable to do another rep, thus making inroads into your existing levels of strength, endurance, and your muscles ability to handle the work given it. The muscles have two choices, die under the oncoming assaults or grow bigger and stronger to handle the loads imposed upon them, trying to overcompensate because basically the body is lazy being more interested in preservation and conservation, resenting being pushed beyond its comfort zone.

This can be a tricky balancing act that if handled wrong can lead to over training, the body’s last line of defense in getting you to back off. Training to positive failure successfully depends on a combination of factors, number of sets, body part splits, how often a given muscle is trained, and the definition of failure.

We hear the terms positive failure and absolute failure, these are not interchangeable and knowing the difference is vital to continued progress. As you may have already guessed absolute failure is far more demanding on your body and must be used sparingly.

Positive failure occurs when a point is reached during a set of reps where the muscles can not do another rep without breaking good form, though loosening form a little would still be considered positive failure but totally abandoning proper form and employing excessive body english would not. In most cases this is sufficient to induce a response from the muscles as the body does not see this as a threat but merely as hard work within the body’s ability to recover and compensate for the next time it is subjected to it, being ready by becoming a little bigger and stronger.

This training, recovery, and compensation relationship must be respected and not taken for granted or advantage of or like any relationship it will blow up in your face in the form of over training, a negative failure where only stalemate and regression reside.

Absolute failure on the other hand is like a lethal weapon that in the wrong hands can be disastrous, resulting in chronic overuse injuries and terminal over training. Absolute failure occurs with the use of intensity principles being added onto a set at its end when another rep is not possible in reasonably good form and some means of trickery is employed to keep the muscle working in the way of forced reps, drop sets, slightly pausing a few seconds, partial reps in the muscles strongest point of leverage, etc.

The fallacy with the notion of absolute failure is that there is no such thing, let me repeat this so you don’t miss it, there is no such thing as absolute failure because with a little rest the muscles are capable of moving a workload, even if it is a reduced amount of workload and this is where people get in trouble, believing they will reach a point where the muscles are totally incapable of work and never finding it, leading them to do far more work than necessary and causing only damage.

You see ignorance of this in every gym, someone will be doing a set and if it looks like the person is about to fail they jump in encouraging the person to do a few more reps, even taking hold of the bar and forcing them to do numerous forced reps before allowing the person to end the set.

I remember the time when I was doing wide grip pulldowns and as I was reaching the end of the set someone reached over me and pulled down on the bar, yelling at me to do a few more reps, ruining the last rep and pissing me off.

I informed him that it was improper to jump into someone’s set without being asked and not knowing the person’s current intensity toleration level. He walked away looking dazed, the thought that one’s training toleration having limitations and fluctuations that needed to be monitored and modulated.

My own brother found this out the hard way. On leg training day he decided to give his thighs a real going over. He did set after set of nonlocking squats with very brief rest between them. I lost track of how many sets he did, but he never found a point where he couldn’t do another set, but an hour later he vomited every half hour on the half hour for the next twelve hours. By the time he was done he looked like death warmed over and missed the next week of workouts and struggled through his workouts the following week, lesson learned.

To say we were hard core would be accurate but more is needed than the ability to push your body to the extreme, you need an understanding of how hard is hard enough, a lesson my brother will never forget.

Another example is the time much earlier in our training careers I decided to put together the ultimate compound set workouts operating on the more is better theory. I strung together the most effective list of exercises for each muscle groups, at least ten exercises in a row. I laid out the master plan to my brother and we proceeded.

The intensity was unreal and the pump was unbelievable, leaving us sore for days. Now in my experience you should not have to wait to start seeing results from your training, this isn’t magic but simple overload and compensation. The first week went by and nothing, the second week passed and still nothing. Even given my young age at the time I knew that to continue on would be foolhardy and more importantly a waste of effort.

It amazed me that the work given to the muscles had zero effect. We could complete all the sets, the muscles seeming to be able to handle the work. It was here that I realized that the ability to do the work did not insure success and that there had to be a turning point to which more is not better but instead more is just more. I took a good look at the workouts and began to reduce the amount of exercises linked in a row, figuring out different amounts for each muscle group according to its size and role of involvement in the workout as a whole.

After these adjustments were made we again commenced training and immediately saw results even though the workouts by comparison with what we had been doing seemed tame and not nearly as hard, learning that less is more or more accurately the right amount was enough to push the muscles without overwhelming them.

So your goal in training is to train to positive failure in good form most of the time with short periods of time using intensity principles to bring up only stubborn or difficult muscle groups, saving the more intense training for a shocking effect to jolt new growth without abusing this and undoing the good benefits of pushing to absolute failure, knowing when to end a set.

3 Speed Training Drills for Break-Neck Speeds

If you want to develop break-neck speeds and you want to blow past your competition on the track field, the football field or any other surface, you’ll want to incorporate these three speed training drills. For best results, incorporate these three speed training drills into your normal athletic training regimen and you’ll have your teammates and your coaches wondering just where you got this new burst of speed from.

Alternating Strides

This is one of those speed training drills that helps to develop your foot speed and your coordination, two things which are essential when it comes to running faster and harder than your competition.

To begin, set up a series of cones (if you have them) or any other brightly colored object in a straight line and at one or two meters apart. From a standing sprint, you’ll want to sprint the length of the objects you’ve laid down, with each step going to each marker. The closer distance each cone is from the other, the shorter your stride will be and the more turnovers you’ll have overall. This will increase your speed considerably if you practice and you keep pulling them in closer as you progress.

Bound Forward

This is one of those speed training drills that may make you look a little funny while doing them, but they work tremendously at helping you develop break-neck speeds. First, start running as if you’re starting any standard drill. Then, leap with your right foot, jumping with your right arm forward, just like you normally move while running. By bounding forward and by taking exaggerated leaps with every stride, trying to go higher and harder every time, you’ll eventually develop those hip and thigh flexor muscles that will take your speed and power to the next level.

Weaving

Place the cones we spoke of before (or any brightly colored object) and place them in a straight line about three meters apart. Then, in between each of those cones, place another set of cones or objects three meters or so to the left.

Then, sprint from one cone to the next, touching each cone with the tips of your fingers as you pass by. Try to take short side steps instead of turning to face each cone and always continue to run forward.

This drill will work on your agility and will help to strengthen your hip and thigh flexors even more. Agility is important to build up if you hope to get faster, and this is one of the best speed training drills for doing just that.

If you want to get faster and you want to develop break-neck speed that makes you the envy of all of your teammates, competitors and even your coaches, you’ll want to practice these three speed training drills at least three times per week in addition to your normal training regimen. That’s the only way to unlock the true speed and power that’s been lying dormant inside of you all this time.

Be Sure You Reward Good Behavior

2. Know the Training Methods Used

Now, all trainers have different training methods, but here are a few basic things that would help you swim confidently in the sea of trainer jargon. There are currently 4 basic methods of training that stem from behavioral psychology: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment. Now, the words positive and negative aren’t representing the concept of “good and evil” here, they function more like they would in math, with positive meaning addition and negative meaning subtraction of something. It will become clearer in a second.

Positive Reinforcement

This is the most popular method today, and, sure enough, you are all familiar with it. Positive reinforcement has, at its core, rewarding a dog for desired behavior usually with a treat, a toy or play time, depending on what motivates your dog the most. The trick is to pick the right timing: just as your dog does the desired behavior, reward him or her right away, and supplement the treat with a high-pitched “good dog”, to make sure your pet realizes how pleased you are with this behavior. See how a treat is added here? This is the positive part, the addition.

Negative Reinforcement

This technique involves taking something unpleasant away to reinforce the desired behavior. That is how electric fences work, for example. When a dog gets too close to the perimeter, it gets a shock, but the shock disappears the moment the dog moves away from the boundary. This way, the dog learns to stay away from the perimeter. See the subtraction here – the unpleasant sensations are taken away to reinforce a behavior, this is negative reinforcement.

Positive Punishment

With punishment techniques, the trainer is trying to make a particular behavior happen less often. With positive punishment, the trainer adds some unpleasant stimuli to discourage a behavior. With excessive barking, for example, a trainer can add a spray bark collar to the training, so that every time a dog barks, it gets sprayed. The dog will associate nuisance barking with being sprayed, and this will discourage him or her from barking all night long again. Did you see how with this technique a trainer would add (=positive) something to discourage a behavior (=punishment).

Negative Punishment

This technique implies taking something away (=negative) in order to discourage a behavior (=punishment). A good example would be if a trainer turns away from a dog that is jumping on him or other people to get attention. He takes the attention away from the dog to discourage undesired behavior. This method is often used together with positive reinforcement to reduce the unwanted behavior and reinforce the desired behavior.

Ah, that was quite a bit of information, right? Did it become somewhat clearer what the different training methods do? Great. There is still much debate around the best training methods in the trainers’ world, but what you choose remains up to you.

3. Choose the Training Type

Group Classes, Boot Camps, In House Training or even Skype chats – there is every type of dog training you might need under the sun. Consider the benefits and drawbacks. With in house dog training the obvious advantage is that you will get more personal attention. If your dog has some socialization issues, in home training won’t be as effective as group dog training classes, where both you and your fido can learn to be around other dogs and work around so many tempting distractions. If you want your dog to get the experience of a full immersion, then a dog training camp will be the best option. Whereas, if your budget is tight, online dog training might be the solution you are looking for. Deciding on the type of training you need will make the task of finding a good dog training school way easier.

4. Watch a Class Before You Sign Up

Once you picked a class or a training school, take some time to come to one of the training sessions and just observe. Pay attention to the following:

How big is the class size and whether you will be getting enough attention,

If puppies and adult dogs are trained separately,

How many levels do the classes have (basic, intermediate, advanced),

How the trainer interacts with the dogs,

How dogs react to the training,

Whether everyone seems to be having fun and enjoying the process.

Preparation is the Mother of skill. Understanding is the Father of skill. We all love to win, but who loves to train? With all of the variations of those quotes I have used over the years so many times, and in so many ways. I still act and genuinely feel that my own advice is fresh meat I am biting on as if it is new meat freshly killed for survival. Indeed, I am like a rabid wolf chomping on reality when it comes to what counts. I named this article the training because reality is mostly preparation, and the actual action compared to that training is not too much compared to the training it takes to take the genuinely winning actions.

I remember the “Rocky” movies (yes, the “Rocky” movies with Sylvester Stallone), every last one of them including the “Creed” movies so far. Most of the movies as you would astutely notice are not about the fight, most of those movies are about the preparation, training and drama, actually very little winning when you really and realistically think about them. So, that brings me to a point: Reality that is won and successful depends mostly on your preparation to handle it. Think about a singer like Susan Boyle, as a better example than the “Rocky” movie example: She was at least thirty years of preparation, singing in her bathroom mirror and in small halls and training, and a few moments on a big show of winning. That is my point, miracles happen, I believe in them and everything, but they take preparation to be valid and working in a genuine sense that is lasting, or the miracle is just genuine “flash in the pan” luck without that substance to make it last if the miracle successfully happens.

Indeed, we must evolve, grow and prepare to make a miracle work for us genuinely and permanently. The genuine failure in life is to depend on luck and miracles from the beginning without preparation or understanding of what is happening. To appreciate and understand anything fully without doubts or fears, we must train. As Yoda essentially said in “Star Wars, Episode Five: The Empire Strikes Back”: There is not try, only do. In the sense I am writing about, that is reality. The person who depends on luck and miracles without preparation essentially tries even if they do succeed, and does not do and just depends on a lucky break or a “miracle” prayer to succeed without consciousness or conscience. The prepared person always does, especially when they genuinely succeed, and if they fail, it is a slip and not a fall, only to succeed later through a better of consciousness and conscience of what needs and wants to be done. So, essentially, to really win without doubt and repeatable results, we must genuinely train and desire, or winning means nothing but a “flash in the pan” like the lucky single three-point shot in a basketball game from mid-court that is not easily repeatable because it is a “buzzer miracle”. In this sense, there is not try, only do, also. Reality is training, and our genuine actions and results in it are the championship game, always.
