A condenser is a device that is used to liquefy gas by cooling it. In HVAC equipment, hot discharge gas (refrigerant vapor) from the compressor enters the condenser coils at the top and is condensed, drains out of the condenser to a receiver located near the bottom. The condenser coil is located along with the compressor and controlling devices in the condensing unit. In a remote or split system air conditioning installation, the condensing unit is located outdoors. Condensers are available in a variety of sizes and designs that include plain tube, finned tube and plate type, series-pass and parallel pass units.

Condensers are classified by their cooling method. The three main types are broken down to:

  1. Air-cooled condensers
  2. Combined air and water-cooled condensers
  3. Water-cooled condensers

Air-Cooled Condensers

An air-cooled condenser consists of a coil of ample surface that air is blown by a fan or induced by natural draft. This type of condenser is universally used in small capacity refrigerating units. Mostly designed for residential or small office air conditioners.

Air-chilled condensers should be kept from free from dirt, lint and other foreign materials because they tend to reduce the airflow around the tubes and fins if they are allowed to accumulate just like evaporators.

Combined Air- and Water-cooled Condensers

This type of condenser is also know as an evaporative condenser and consists of a coil cooled by water sprayed from above and then cold air enters from the bottom and is blown across the coils. As water evaporates from the coil it creates a cooling effect that condenses the refrigerant within the coil. The refrigerant gas in the coil is hot which changed to the liquid state by combining the sprayed water and the large column of moving air supplied by the fan. The water that does not evaporate is recirculated by means of a pump.

Water-Cooled Condensers

A water-cooled condenser is similar to a steam surface condenser in that cooling is accomplished by water alone that circulates through tubes or coils enclosed in a shell. IN a water-cooled condenser the refrigerant circulates through the annular space between the tubes or coils. Because of its construction, a water-cooled condenser is also referred to as a double-pipe condenser.

Because an evaporative condenser is not wasteful of water, large compressor installations are possible in areas where water is scarce. Tests have shown that the amount of water required will not exceed the.03 gpm per ton of refrigeration. This is one of the eco-friendly reasons to use this type of condenser. Evaporative condensers also eliminate water water disposal problems and provide the most economical means of cooling refrigerant gases of standard air conditioners.

I’m sure by now everyone has noticed, the heat has officially set in this summer. It’s time to cool off with some delicious fruits and vegetables that actually help lower your bodies temperature and keep you nice and hydrated. The raw food diet is probably the most ideal diet for summer time as everything yummy is in season, lower in price, and there is no need to turn on that hot stove or oven to whip up a delicious meal. Nature provides an abundance of foods this time of year to help keep us cool and nourished. Many fruits and veggies that have a shorter season like summer squashes, cucumbers, and melons come into their full glory during the hottest months, and have the most cooling effect. Some cooling vegetables include crunchy lettuces, mixed baby greens, celery, crisp sunflower greens and sprouts, and broccoli which make great salad fixings. Chop up some fresh corn into your summer salads as well, I have certainly been enjoying that lately. For a light dressing try a high quality extra virgin olive oil like bariani, and our brand new coconut vinegar and coconut aminos. Combine with minced fresh herbs and a pinch of salt and our salad will be rawkin and ready to go.

Aim for high levels of juicy fruits during the summer. Melons of all kinds are amazing, watermelon being especially cooling to the system. Try also different varieties like galia, crenshaw, canary, Tucson cantaloupe, and casaba. Some of these melons are so sweet and delicately flavored and textured that they nearly melt in your mouth. Keep your melons in the fridge once ripe to avoid spoilage and to heighten their cooling effect on the body. Make sure to load up on lots of tomatoes, fresh bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, and yellow summer squashes too, as these are cooling fruits that will make great bases for savory meals when fruit isn’t hitting the spot. You can make veggie chips out of the summer squashes by simply marinating in a little olive oil, salt and herbs and dehydrating until crisp. Also, one of my ultimate summer meals is zucchini pasta, which is so light and flavorful, even your cooked food friends will be amazed that it is raw and so easy to make. Great for summer potlucks and family meals.

Here are just a few of my favorite summertime recipes:

Cilantro-Lime Watermelon Juice- (Brrr…this juice is SURE to cool you off quickly)

1/3-1/2 of an organic seeded watermelon- chilled in the fridge. Rinse outer rind thoroughly because you will be juicing the rind as well. The rind of the watermelon is very mild in flavor and packs a punch of minerals, and will help balance the sweetness of the flesh.

1 handful fresh cilantro

juice of 1 whole lime

3 handfuls fresh sunflower greens

Optional- 3 large lacinto kale leafs (black dino kale)

Juice together and serve right away.

Cool Cucumber Dill Soup

3 cucumbers peeled

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1 whole avocado

2 tbs fresh dill

2-3 tbs bariani olive oil or Ruth’s hemp seed Oil

a few pinches Bali sea salt to taste

Simply blend above ingredients until very smooth, garnish with a bit of fresh dill and chunks of avocado. This soup is amazingly light, refreshing, and yet filling Great with flax crackers for a light evening meal.

No Heat Pasta

*Spiralize both green zucchini and yellow summer squash for a nice color variation

Summer Noodles:

2 zucchini, 1 yellow summer squash spiralized

sun dried tomato Sauce:

2 medium heirloom tomatoes

1 cup sun dried tomatoes- soak for a few hours to soften

1/4 cup bariani olive oil

1/3 cup chopped fresh basil

fresh herbs to taste such as oregano, sage, and thyme

A few pinches of Bali sea salt

-Optional- 1 clove garlic (will increase the heat element of this dish)

hemp seed Pesto:

1/4 cup hemp seeds

1/2 cup walnuts

1/4 cup bariani olive oil, hemp oil, or pumpkin seed oil.

1 cup packed basil

1/8 cup lemon juice

A few pinches of Bali sea salt to taste

Optional- 1 clove of garlic.

Both of these sauces can be blended until smooth or left a bit chunky in a food processor depending on your preference. spoon onto zucchini noodles, garnish with fresh basil leaves

Follow your bodies natural gravitation towards light, refreshing raw foods this summer to stay balanced and active. Also remember to drink plenty of fresh, pure water along with your fruits and vegetables to ensure our body is perfectly hydrated even as the temperatures rise.

No matter the size of your facility, ventilation will play a key role in the first impression of visitors to the kennel. Simply stated, ventilation is controlled, directed air movement.

Design basics:

  1. Air exchanges: change all of the air in the room four to six times an hour. Calculate the room volume in cubic feet, multiply the result by four, five or six, then divide by sixty to find the air volume, in cfm (cubic feet per minute).
  2. Exhaust pick-up points: most kennel odors are created at the same level as the dogs so position your exhaust pick up points lower than 30 inches to insure the odors are pulled downward, away from your nose. However, not lower than twelve inches from the floor to prevent cleaning water from entering the ventilation system.
  3. How many exhaust pick up points: Multiple points throughout the room insure air movement has the chance to properly circulate. Remember we are not talking about the return air duct to your heat system, we’re talking about exhaust vents to remove air from the room.
  4. Air supply: Install your air supply vents, high up in the room. This allows the air to flow downward to the exhaust pick up points, thereby pulling the odors down, and away from your nose. Remember, supply air must be filtered and tempered, (heated or cooled), not be raw outside air. Your HVAC contractor can install a unit that provides sufficient fresh air into the ventilation system to meet the supply requirements.
  5. Position of air supply and exhaust vents: Position the supply vents over the aisle ways and the exhaust pick up points at the back of the runs in the walls or as pipes coming down the walls. If the heating source is a “hot air” system, have one third of the heated air introduced at the floor and two thirds introduced via the vents over the aisle ways.
  6. Type and design of the exhaust fan: You’ll want to use a blower with a centrifugal wheel as the air mover. Fans and blowers that use a blade similar to that of a window fan won’t be able to overcome the static pressure created by the ductwork required for multiple pick up points
  7. Size the blower: Create a safety factor by multiplying the cfm you calculated in step #1, by 1.5 to insure your moving enough air, then choose the exhaust blower to move that amount of cfm at ½” of static pressure or higher. Static pressure is resistance to air flow, usually created by the duct system.
  8. Duct sizing: High air velocity in the system will insure good air flow so size the ducts for around 2000 fpm (feet per minute) air velocity. The easiest approach to sizing is to determine the size of duct needed to handle the total air flow, then, install that size as the primary duct, throughout the building. Determine the number of drops you want and divide the area of the primary duct by the number of drops. Each drop is then sized to that area. Use this formula to determine primary duct size: (cfm / 1500fpm) x 144 = duct area in square inches

· Area of a circle: radius squared times 3.14 ( [r x r] x 3.14) Example of area of 3″ round duct: (1.5 x 1.5) x 3.14 = 7.065 sq inches

· Convert square inches to square feet: divide square inches by 144. From the example above 7.065 square inches divided by 144 = .049 square feet.

Example:

1. Kennel room is 20 ft x 15 ft with a 10 ft high ceiling: 20 x 20 x 10 = 4000 cubic feet

2. Five (5) air changes per hour = 4000 x 5 = 20,000 cubic feet

3. Determine cfm (cubic feet per minute) 20,000 / 60 = 333 cfm

4. Safety factor air flow: 1.5 x 333 = 500 cfm

5. From Grainger’s: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2C946 This blower moves 537 cfm at ½” of static pressure, and is only $165.38 and can be plugged into most outlets.

6. Primary duct size in square inches: (500cfm / 2000 fpm) x 144 = 36 square inch duct. You could use 6’x 6″ square duct, or 7″ diameter round duct.

Why Your Air Conditioner May Not Be Working (Or Working Well)

Few things are more frustrating than buying something new that doesn’t work. A significant financial investment like an air conditioner definitely should not be that way. There are key points to keep in mind when buying an air conditioner, and yes, you need to maintain it too. So if you have a fairly new air conditioner (less than a couple years old), read on for the reasons why it may not be working too well.

  • Too big. A unit that is too large will not remove humidity well.
  • Too small. A unit that is too small will not get your home cool enough on the hottest days.
  • Improper installation. Customers should pay attention to duct installation, unit location, and insulation amount.
  • Low energy efficiency ratio. An air conditioner model with high efficiency is important. At minimum, air conditioners need to have a seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of 13. Higher SEER ratings will equal greater savings. Look for an Energy Star sticker that gives the energy efficiency rating or calculate the rating yourself by dividing the watt rating into the BTU.
  • Dirty filter. Don’t forget to clean or replace your air conditioner’s filter. Dirty filters block air flow and will reduce your air conditioning system’s efficiency greatly. Air that does get through may carry dirt to the evaporator coil and limit the coil’s heat-absorbing ability. Some filters are reusable while others must be replaced. Filters should be cleaned or replaced every 1-2 months, when using the air condition often. Filters may need to be checked even more frequently if the air condition is on constantly, the house is dusty, or there are pets in the house.
  • Dirty evaporator coil. Even with a clean filter, the evaporator coil will still collect dirt, just not as fast. The evaporator coil should be check every year and cleaned as necessary.

For those with old air conditioners (from the 1970s and earlier), save energy by getting a new air conditioner as today’s most efficient air conditioners use 30% to 50% less energy to produce the same amount of cooling as air conditioners from the 1970s.
