Preserving Food Using Citric Acid

[ad_1]

Nowadays, everyone is trying to lose weight. A common complaint is that it is too expensive to keep fruits and vegetables at your house. The shelf life is so short that the product often goes bad before you get a chance to eat it. Then you have to throw it away and buy new stuff, but it’s discouraging and can often feel like throwing away money. Most people just head to the junk food aisle and settle on unhealthy snacks that promote weight gain and heart problems instead of learning ways to preserve the healthy, fresh food.

So how can you preserve those ‘farmers market’ foods so that you can keep them on hand for a healthy lifestyle? One popular method is ‘canning’. Canning food is a great way to keep your products for a long time, neatly organized in your food cabinet. There are two ways to can: The boiling water method and the pressure canning method. Both are safe, and the method used will depend on what food you’re canning. Low acid foods can be preserved by pressure cooking because of their pH levels (under 4.6). Higher acid foods (about 4.6), need to be preserved using the boiling water method. Here’s where it gets tricky. If you have a food that is close to a 4.6 pH level, you will need to add acid to it. The reason high acid foods can be preserved simply by using the boiling water method, is because they have enough acid so that Clostridium botulinum spores can not grow their harmful, often deadly, toxin. Foods like tomato and figs need extra acid so that the shelf life can sustain an environment without harmful growth on the food.

I’ve found citric acid to be the best additive to prevent bacteria growth, both in canning and simple preservation of fruits, vegetables and other foods. Whether or not you prefer to can is irrelevant. That is just one of the ways to keep your food fresher, for longer. If you are just looking to add days to the shelf life of your fruits or vegetables, you can add the citric acid directly, not needing any special type of processing or cans to keep the food fresh.

Many stores and websites sell citric acid to the average consumer. Oftentimes it is packaged under the name ‘sour salt’. It can come packaged looking like a spice in a shake container, or by the bag. Some companies sell it by the pound, so you can get the biggest bang for your buck. Buying by the pound will save you money and allow you to use it for various things. Do your research and you will find citric acid has multiple benefits, far beyond food preservation.

How Much Plastic is Your ADHDer Exposed to?

[ad_1]

The dangers of using plastic for carrying food, storing food, covering food, heating food, and using plastic for wrapping food are, fortunately, fast becoming common knowledge. For example, Canada has declared the plastic’s chemical bisphenol-a (BPA), which is used to strengthen some plastics, toxic and banned its use.

As plastic ages or is exposed to extreme temperatures, such as heating or freezing, it releases traces of dangerous components.

The two components of greatest concern are BPA (mentioned above) and phthalates, used to soften plastic.

Other plastics are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which leaks acetaldehyde, a suspected carcinogen (capable of causing cancer) into your food and drinks.

These chemicals are used in the following items:

· baby bottles

· can linings

· children’s toys

· vinyl shower curtains

· shopping bags

· plastic food covering

· some plastic containers

· salad dressing bottles

· cooking oil bottles

· plastic containers made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride) which leak lead, cadmium, mercury, phthalates and the carcinogen, diergyl hexyphosphate into your food

· soft drink bottles/soda bottles

· water bottles

· peanut butter jars

· meat trays

· foam take-out food containers and cups

· foam packing material made from polystyrene (PS) which leaks styrene into your food, known to damage your nervous system

These chemicals come into your body through food, water and bits of dust you consume or a simply absorbed through your skin.

BPA and phthalates affect the endocrine system as they mimic estrogen and other hormones, and therefore are a cause for concern in your AD-HD child and siblings, as well as for adults.

Plastics have been linked to the following problems:

· Structural brain damage

· Hyperactivity

· Increased aggressiveness

· Impaired learning

· Increased fat formation

· Risk of obesity

· Changed immune system

· Early puberty

· Stimulation of mammary gland development

· Disruptive reproductive cycles

· Ovarian dysfunction

· Changes in gender-specific behaviour

· Abnormal sexual behaviour

· Stimulation of prostate cancer cells

· Increased prostate signs

· Decreased sperm production

So, what can you do? Avoid:

· plastic bottles

· toys labelled with the numbers of 3 or 7

· canned foods, especially those with acidic contents like tomatoes

· heating plastic in microwaves

· freezing plastics in freezers

· plastic cups, utensils, dishware and feed storage containers

· canned drinks

· plastic nappies, use cloth ones

Also,

· boycott plastic shopping bags, use the canvas or cloth varieties

· filter your own water using a reverse-osmosis filter, and fill up glass bottles

· for ease of carrying around use a stainless steel bottle

· if preferring a glass bottle to carry around cover with a neoprene sleeve to avoid breakage

· bring your own cup for coffee/tea-on-the-go

· buy toys made of natural fibres

· look for products with minimal packaging

· use cloth shower curtains

· use wooden spoons and other wooden kitchen utensils

· use biodegradable bags for pet clean up

The sad thing is that it is children and the foetus who are the innocent victims of contamination by plastic toxins.

It is going to be difficult to have a plastic-free environment because plastic is evident in shoes, clothing, electronics, every processed food package, cars, household items and personal care products, but some action is better than none.

This is also an environmental concern, for no matter how vigilant you are at home, you are still in danger of this chemical contamination from the environment.

Having an AD-HDer in your family many of whose bodily functions are ‘different ‘, it is more important than ever to be aware of what toxins your child consumes, especially those insidious, inadvertent ones.

How to Test a Whirlpool Refrigerator Cold Control

[ad_1]

In order to complete this job you will need the following tools:

Needle nose pliers

phillip screwdriver

1/4″ nut driver

Ohm meter (Voltage Meter)

The first thing that you need to do , is unplug the refrigerator from its power source. The cold control is a thermostat that regulates the temperature inside of the refrigerator. Most cold controls are located refrigerator not the freezer. Although there are a few that are located in the freezer. This is more commonly found in older models of side by side models. When you have two controls in your refrigerator, the control that has the off position is the Cold Control. The other control operates a damper that allows the airflow from freezer to the refrigerator. Remove the control panel from the wall then you should be able to locate the cold control. The cold control will have two wires that are plugged into it. You will need to remove these two wires, and a long capillary sensor.

Note: This test is to be performed while the cold control is set to the ON position. Now put each of the Ohm meter leads onto each of the terminals on the control. If the control contacts are closed, there will be a zero reading on a digital voltage meter or on a standard voltage meter the needle will move to the right. If there is number one reading on the voltage meter if using a digital meter, this means the control contacts are open and the cold control is going to need to be replaced.

Note: This test is to be performed while the cold control is set to the OFF position. Now you need to put each of the Voltage meter leads on each of the terminals of the control. If the control contacts are closed, there will be a zero reading on the digital Voltage meter. If the control contacts are closed while in the OFF position, the cold control is bad and will need to be replaced.

We know this is only a general idea on how to test your refrigerator cold control, but it should give you the most important points to be able to complete the job. If you still have any questions on this process, please feel free to contact our tech support. They will be standing by to take your calls, and help you in any way that they can.

Nutrisystem Vs Buying Lean Cuisine

[ad_1]

The other day, I received an email from someone who asked if buying frozen meals like lean cuisine or smart ones at the grocery store would yield the same weight loss results as the Nutrisystem diet. She perceived that the frozen meals were cheaper, even though she suspected that they weren’t going to yield as drastic results. Still, she hoped that she could get some at least some weight loss from the grocery store and asked my opinion on this. I’ll tell you what I told her in the following article.

The Basic Weight Loss Equation And Why Nutrisystem Takes This Further: Everyone knows this, but it bears repeating. You will lose weight if you repeatedly take in less calories than you are burning. This equation has been around since the beginning of time and it’s very simple. Yet, it’s simplicity doesn’t ensure that we’re any more successful with it. As a population, we are fatter today than ever – so perhaps this isn’t so simple after all.

Nutrisystem takes this a bit further by putting ketosis into the equation. Basically, carbs and proteins also come into play. In this way, this diet sort of takes what works from both low calorie and high protein diets. The foods are designed to be low in calories and carbohydrates, but low in protein. This sounds pretty basic too, but it actually does make your body burn fat much faster. The reason for this is that you are no longer giving it the carbs that it is used to burning. So instead, it must rely on your fat stores.

Any diet that we are comparing to Nutrisystem then should also be able to put your body in ketosis if you are going to have similar results. Therefore, I’m going to be looking at lean cuisine in terms of nutrition, calories, fiber, and carbohydrates. For the sake of comparing apples to apples, I’m going to compare two similar foods – nutrisystem’s and lean cuisine’s pizza – which are both popular items.

Lean Cuisine Pizza Nutrition Information: This product has 320 calories, and 80 of them are from fat. In total, it contains 9 grams of fat. There are 17 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. The most troublesome thing to me here is the carbohydrates contained. There are a whopping 42. I find it very doubtful that you will get in ketosis with even a few of these meals daily. And, if you limited yourself to one, you’d still need to be very careful throughout the remainder of the day, especially if you are preparing the foods yourself.

Nutrisystem Pizza Nutritional Information: This item has only 250 calories, with 70 of them coming from fat. There are 8 fat grams. There is 11 grams of protein. But, there are only 28 grams of carbs. This is 14 less and this can make a big difference over time. You are also saving 70 calories which can add up also.

Another thing to consider with Nutrisystem is that you won’t need to be careful or conscious of what you eat for the rest of the day. They balance the meals out for you so that you’re eating no more than about 1200 calories per day and taking in a low enough amount of carbs and a high enough amount of protein so that you will get in ketosis. They provide the foods for you (three meals, a snack, and a dessert.) The dinner options (like the pizza) are the highest in calories and carbs. But the lunch and breakfasts are light on both of these. The whole thing is designed to give you the nutrients that you need while making sure that you approach both equations correctly.

Testing A Diet’s Effectiveness: If you’re still not sure which way you want to go, you can get ketone strips at most drug stores. These will tell you if you are in are or approaching ketosis. You can do this after a week or so on the lean cuisine meals to see what happens. I suspect that those extra carbs and calories would add up after a week though, but see for yourself. I can tell you from experience that a week of this diet will very likely put you in this place so long as you follow the instructions.

The company then focused its attention on research and development of ways to product a pet provision without the use of synthetic chemicals and preservatives. They arrived at the discovery of rosemary as an organic preservative. That discovery marked the birth of the first 100% organic canine food.

The Right Way to Move a Refrigerator

[ad_1]

There are many times a person may need to move a refrigerator in his or her lifetime. Often, a person may be moving to a new home and simply can not part with a Whirlpool fridge freezer or Bosch fridge. These are two high quality brands of refrigerators that no person wants to lose out on, simply because he or she could not move them to a new home.

To begin the process of safely moving a refrigerator, a person should first gather the necessary supplies. A person will need a large moving dolly of some sort, as well as cleaning supplies. In addition, a person should have rope, moving blankets, and tape on hand to go forward with the moving process.

Moving a refrigerator will likely take about twelve hours of one’s time. After one has gathered the necessary supplies, he or she should make sure to empty the entire fridge of its contents. A person should also remove any magnets or calendars that may be attached to the fridge.

Next, a person will need to unplug the refrigerator and allow the freezer part to defrost. One does not want his or her Smeg fridge freezer to break during the moving process, simply because he or she forgot to allow it time to defrost. After allowing the freezer to defrost, a person should remember to clean it out the next day.

It is a wise idea to tape all of the shelves and doors of a fridge shut. This way, the shelves will not fly out in case the fridge moves around in a moving truck.

Now that the fridge is prepared to be moved, a person should use the dolly to transport it to a moving truck. Two people should be used for moving the fridge onto a dolly and then moving the dolly to a moving truck. This will prevent any person from being injured due to a back strain. A person will then pull a fridge up the ramp of a moving truck.

After moving the fridge to its new destination, a person should position it into its new space. A person should give a fridge about three hours to settle before plugging it in. By allowing the fridge these few hours, any liquids in the fridge will be able to settle. This is critical for the cooling mechanism of any fridge.

After this time has passed, then a person may plug it in and should leave the fridge alone for 3 days. Three days is required for any fridge to reach an optimum temperature. Also, a person should always read the manual that goes along with a fridge, to determine the safest ways to reinstall it in a home.

Basic Dog Commands – Training a Puppy

[ad_1]

All things in life need to grow and develop. This applies to our relationships as well. This also applies to our relationships with our dogs. Whether you just got your furry best friend and want to plant the seeds of a harmonious long-term friendship, or you have been living together for a while, and want to take your relationship to the next level, we all need guidance sometimes. And just like you would go to a specialist if you wanted more out of your relationship with your partner, you would go to a… dog training school if you needed to work on your relationship with your dog.

The question is, how do you find a good specialist? Now, if you were just feeling under the weather, you would probably go to a general practitioner. But what if you had a toothache? I bet you would go to a dentist instead! Same with dog training. First, you need to decide whether you want to work on general obedience, aggression, separation anxiety, or maybe you want to take on therapy dog training or a protection dog training course. And then you got to read on because we created a list of local hidden gems in San Diego area that specialize in exactly the kind of dog training classes you want!

Now, what types of dog training schools are we going to look at exactly?

Dog Obedience Training

Aggressive Dog Training

Protection Dog Training or Guard Dog Training

Behavior Modification Dog Training – Dog Separation Anxiety Training

Therapy Dog Training

Service Dog Training

All of these gems have 5-star ratings on Yelp, tons of happy clients and they are local, oftentimes family-owned businesses, so you can make great friends among your neighbors while doing some training as well!

First things first, there are plenty of options out there in regards to dog training. How do you know which one is good for you? Here are 6 tips.

6 Tips For Picking the Right Dog Training School

1. Know That the Dog Training Industry is Unregulated

That means that virtually anyone could call him or herself a trainer, sadly. However, there are certifications and organizations that can help you identify those who actually have the right designations and experience. Always check to see if the trainer has some of the following certifications: The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), The Academy for Dog Trainers (ADT), the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CPDT KA), the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior (KPAATB), or the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. Being the primary educational organization for trainers, APDT has a very useful resource called Trainer Search that allows you to find trainers in your area based on your city or zip code. Great tool! Note that if a trainer is certified by the APDT it does not necessarily imply that he or she uses a specific training method, which brings us to the next tip.

2. Know the Training Methods Used

Now, all trainers have different training methods, but here are a few basic things that would help you swim confidently in the sea of trainer jargon. There are currently 4 basic methods of training that stem from behavioral psychology: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment and negative punishment. Now, the words positive and negative aren’t representing the concept of “good and evil” here, they function more like they would in math, with positive meaning addition and negative meaning subtraction of something. It will become clearer in a second.

Positive Reinforcement

This is the most popular method today, and, sure enough, you are all familiar with it. Positive reinforcement has, at its core, rewarding a dog for desired behavior usually with a treat, a toy or play time, depending on what motivates your dog the most. The trick is to pick the right timing: just as your dog does the desired behavior, reward him or her right away, and supplement the treat with a high-pitched “good dog”, to make sure your pet realizes how pleased you are with this behavior. See how a treat is added here? This is the positive part, the addition.

Negative Reinforcement

This technique involves taking something unpleasant away to reinforce the desired behavior. That is how electric fences work, for example. When a dog gets too close to the perimeter, it gets a shock, but the shock disappears the moment the dog moves away from the boundary. This way, the dog learns to stay away from the perimeter. See the subtraction here – the unpleasant sensations are taken away to reinforce a behavior, this is negative reinforcement.

Positive Punishment

With punishment techniques, the trainer is trying to make a particular behavior happen less often. With positive punishment, the trainer adds some unpleasant stimuli to discourage a behavior. With excessive barking, for example, a trainer can add a spray bark collar to the training, so that every time a dog barks, it gets sprayed. The dog will associate nuisance barking with being sprayed, and this will discourage him or her from barking all night long again. Did you see how with this technique a trainer would add (=positive) something to discourage a behavior (=punishment).

Negative Punishment

This technique implies taking something away (=negative) in order to discourage a behavior (=punishment). A good example would be if a trainer turns away from a dog that is jumping on him or other people to get attention. He takes the attention away from the dog to discourage undesired behavior. This method is often used together with positive reinforcement to reduce the unwanted behavior and reinforce the desired behavior.

Ah, that was quite a bit of information, right? Did it become somewhat clearer what the different training methods do? Great. There is still much debate around the best training methods in the trainers’ world, but what you choose remains up to you.

Now that you’ve learnt more about the behavioral psychology, do you start seeing some similarities between how we train dogs and how the government trains us? On to the next tip.

3. Choose the Training Type

Group Classes, Boot Camps, In House Training or even Skype chats – there is every type of dog training you might need under the sun. Consider the benefits and drawbacks. With in house dog training the obvious advantage is that you will get more personal attention. If your dog has some socialization issues, in home training won’t be as effective as group dog training classes, where both you and your fido can learn to be around other dogs and work around so many tempting distractions. If you want your dog to get the experience of a full immersion, then a dog training camp will be the best option. Whereas, if your budget is tight, online dog training might be the solution you are looking for. Deciding on the type of training you need will make the task of finding a good dog training school way easier.

4. Watch a Class Before You Sign Up

Once you picked a class or a training school, take some time to come to one of the training sessions and just observe. Pay attention to the following:

How big is the class size and whether you will be getting enough attention,

If puppies and adult dogs are trained separately,

How many levels do the classes have (basic, intermediate, advanced),

How the trainer interacts with the dogs,

How dogs react to the training,

Whether everyone seems to be having fun and enjoying the process.

If you ticked all the checkboxes here, and are comfortable with the environment, you have found a good candidate.

5. Don’t Forget About Vaccinations

Safety first! Make sure your dog is properly vaccinated before you start any dog training and get the green light from your vet. Next, ensure that the training school requires every dog to be vaccinated and is asking for a proof. This way you can rest assured that the safety aspect of your training is covered.

6. Ask About the Follow Up

Now, what happens after you have completed the course? Do you get a lifetime membership and can come any time for future “tune ups”, or are follow up visits limited? Maybe there are no follow up visits in case a problem does arise. Make sure to ask the school or the trainer about what happens once you are done with their program.

Great, you are all set for the dog training school of your dreams. Now, we are introducing you to the 10 hidden gem schools with 5-star Yelp ratings that specialize in the type of dog training you are looking for. Go ahead and find the one for you!

Know Different Types of Tile & Stone Installation

[ad_1]

You dream to be the owner of a building that is picture-perfect, as well as, versatile. You want it to counter the ravaging influence of time. If you are genuinely interested in making an ultimate statement, then, you have to choose the tile and stone installation. The material base lends a timeless durability to structures. Apart from this, such installations also stand out, on account of their grace and natural beauty.

Endless options to choose from

The category includes plenty of options. You can make your pick from the ceramic, porcelain and glass tiles. As far as the stone-based installation is concerned, you will not run short of options that are unique, appealing and natural. Just as you can choose marble or granite, similarly, you can use travertine to come up with a long-lasting designing solution.

Things that you should know

It is important that you are aware of the features and finishes of the different types of stone and tile-based installation. You should know how much to pay for the tile or stone that you have selected. But do remember, installation charge and knowing the cost of materials are not the only aspects to focus on. You should know the maintenance cost, as well. For instance, if you understand that it is easier and more economical to maintain tile than installations based on stone, then, you can take a useful decision.

Know the performance of each installation

Product performance of individual installation varies according to the density. Porousness and glaze also affect the net performance and durability. Granite, as well as marble, is denser than the other varieties of stone. So, if you have to choose between these and travertine, you should vote for the former. With their greater density, they impart solidarity and permanence to installations. Just as you need to study the hardness level of different types of wood while selecting wooden furniture, similarly, you should know which stone type is denser than the other. Only then, you can assess the performance potential of different installations.

Different types of tiles

While researching the tile and stone installation, you have already noted that tile is more cost-effective to manage and maintain than stone. So, you are looking for one of the best varieties of tile. In this context, it is worth noting that different varieties of tiles are rated differently. Flooring experts categorize different varieties according to their abrasion resistance and overall durability. The rating comes on a scale of one to five. Both porcelain, as well as, ceramic tile is rated highly because of their durability and resistance to abrasion. Glass tiles are not rated that highly. You now know the reasons that are responsible.

Constructional differences are also there

Ceramic tiles of the glazed type are made of earth materials. But since the porcelain tile happens to be the hardest, it is used across a wide variety of applications. The latter is more popular than the former in the constructional industry. Glass tiles come in different textures, sizes, colors, and shapes. The glass-based variety accommodates mosaic configuration. You can use the type to accentuate the impact of your floors, showers, and backsplashes.

Camu Camu Berry – Do You Need a Mood Lift That Also Supports Your Health?

[ad_1]

With the busy complex world we are all living in it’s no wonder so many people are looking for a mood lifter. Along with something to make you feel better, be happier and boost up your health, you’d like more energy as well.

If you’re not into using drugs whether they’re pharmaceutical or illicit drugs, if you’re not into caffeine energy shot drinks filled with synthetic chemicals and you’re not finding what you need through exercise or your diet. Then I want to introduce you to a little cherry size berry that grows down in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil and Peru.

The reason I think this specific little fruit can be a solution for lifting your mood, providing energy, helping make you healthier and happier is mainly because that’s what it does for me. I don’t expect or want you to just take my word for it. There are some specific components and information about this little fruit that supports my experience over the nearly 4 years I have been consuming Camu Camu on a daily basis.

The Camu Camu berry tree grows partially submerged under the bio mass of the flood waters of the Amazon for five months of the year. The Camu Camu berry absorbs the micro-nutrients and dense nutritional life energy from the rainforest. This combines to create a fruit that is not only the highest source of vital vitamin C of any planet but also makes it a powerful antioxidant source. These and other aspects of the Camu Camu berry provide you with energy through the dense and powerful level of nutrition you get.

Some of the benefits that support my Camu Camu experience are:

Maintains emotional stability and enhances mood

Supports anti-aging and cardiovascular health

Provides nutrition for healthy skin, hair and nails

Provides powerful antioxidants for disease prevention

The world’s highest natural concentration of immune-boosting vitamin C, which catalyzes the production of serotonin – the “feel good” hormone in the brain that controls sleep, mood, appetite and libido. Vitamin C in high enough daily amounts is known to be a powerful aid for disease prevention. (read my article about vitamin C)

Have I made any head way in showing you why I think that daily consumption of pure concentrated Camu Camu berry can do the things I said it can do.

If you’re looking to lift your mood, feel better and happier, get extra energy, higher levels of vitamin C and some powerful health promoting antioxidants then this may be it for you. There are actually other nutritional compounds and benefits I haven’t even gotten into. I think you get the idea that the Camu Camu berry is a truly powerful super food for living in this busy complex modern world.
