After the first few days of matches, it looks like the players are getting a grip on the new type of ball; there has been improvement already as the matches roll out and the ball is in play more. There is no changing the official ball once the World Cup has started so players will just have to adjust. Every player will have the same adjustment to make, so the playing field is level even it it does present a few new twists in how to play the ball. These are the very best soccer players on earth and they are quite capable of understanding and acting on any small changes in the ball. Weather always has a fairly profound effect on the ball anyway and players have had to adapt to these differences in ball motion due to temperature and altitude since the game began.

The Jabulani is now the most well known ball by name in the history of World Cup Match Balls; most soccer fans cannot even name any other ball. This one is very special and will long be remembered for its beauty, street cool and controversy much like the African continent itself. Dear Princess Diana,

This letter was prompted by an issue of People magazine.

Actually that particular article was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Some years ago I had an impressive dream. During the dream you, Prince Charles and myself were engaged in an intense talk. We were sitting around though quite relaxed, comfortable amongst each other (at ease as if we’d known each other for years as good friends), in an enclosed patio or spring porch – a garden atmosphere. I recall you did most of the talking — pouring out your heart to me — as Prince Charles sort of quietly listened. Perhaps it’s because we’re closer in age. I’m 27. As I began to awaken from the dream I became upset with how foolish to imagine the Royalty of Wales taking me into their confidence. I kneeled for morning prayer and asked God to rebuke such presumptuous thoughts, but asked if there were any significance to the dream that a chart I had (“The Heritage of the Anglo-Saxon Race”) loaned out months earlier be returned at Sabbath services that day.

Lo and behold, the chart was returned that day! Rather convenient, since when I arrived home I had received a memo in the mail from our local newspaper. I had submitted a question to them whether the present British Royal Family were aware of their unique Davidic ancestry — the remarkable continuation of King David’s dynasty. I felt my question could be answered while also cleverly bringing this royal fact to greater public attention if published. An unexpected turn of events occurred though! The newspaper related: “If you send us a copy of the information on King David and his relationship to the English Royal Family, plus a verification that such information has been validated and by whom, we will see to it that it gets to Buckingham Palace and that your name will accompany it.” Immediately I wondered what to send to satisfy the newspaper. The chart seemed obvious, but I still sought counsel from my minister. He advised writing a Church official at our Headquarter’s in Pasadena, California who is English and involved with our Media Coordinator. The Church official replied: “I believe the most prudent course of action would be to send the chart ‘The Heritage of the Anglo-Saxon Race’ to the newspaper for their further action.”

I sent the information to the newspaper and they sent it to Buckingham Palace. They also cautioned me not to hold my breath for any response, which was good since I haven’t heard a word yet.

Several years later, during my volunteer service at Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan in Northern Israel, a Holocaust survivor (whom I adopted as my “kibbutz mother”) mentioned hearing about some royal marital problems. I dismissed it as gossip from some tabloid trash — but then immediately I recalled the dream where you were pouring out your heart to me about something. So I thought perhaps there’s something to all these godless rumors, but all marriages have their ups and downs.

Since then I’ve heard too many royal rumors & sovereign stories about differences in your marriage. The latest People article prompted me to write you and sincerely offer my continued support for you and your lovely family. My heart goes out to you all with deep affection.

The Impact of Brexit on UK’s Legal Landscape

Brexit is now a reality after the EU Referendum resulted in a 52% ‘Leave’ vote. What remains to be seen is how and when we leave the EU and what the shape of our future relationship with it will be. There are still an enormous number of unknowns but the impact of Brexit on the UK’s legal system could be wide ranging in many areas, whatever form Brexit takes.

Under the Ordinary Legislative Procedure (in somewhat simplified terms), the Executive body, the European Commission (essentially the EU’s civil service and government) proposes new legislation. The proposals are then commented on and revised by the European Parliament (which has directly elected representatives but no legislative initiative) and by the Council of the European Union (Council), the main decision making body made up of ministerial representatives from each Member State. Trilogies then begin between the three bodies to resolve differences and finally agree legislation. Legislation can also be adopted under the more complex Special Legislative Procedure. For legal firms in London, it is necessary to keep a close watch on this part.

Treaties

The Treaties of the European Union set out the constitutional basis of the EU and are the highest level of EU legislation. They create the Single Market based on the four fundamental freedoms of the European Union: freedom of movement of people, services, goods, and capital. EU Treaties are incorporated into UK law by the European Communities Act 1972 (ECA) which also provides the legislative basis for transposing EU law into domestic law and gives precedence to binding provisions of EU law over inconsistent UK legislation and legal firms in London.

Regulations and Directives

At the next level of legislation are EU Regulations. These are directly applicable under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union which means they apply in Member States without the need for implementing legislation. Conversely, Directives require Member States to draft legislation to transpose them into their own law. This has resulted in individual Member States taking differing approaches, for example, by ‘gold plating’ legislation, i.e. going beyond the scope of the Directive. As the EU has focused on “ever closer union”, however, Directives have recently tended to be maximum harmonisation measures which means that gold plating is not permitted and guidelines to prevent gold plating were adopted in the UK in 2011.

Decisions

At the lowest end of the legislative scale are Commission Decisions which are binding on the subject, and opinions and recommendations which have no legally binding effect.

Areas of influence

The EU can only legislate in certain areas. It has no discretion to adopt legally binding acts which require Member States to harmonise their laws on areas including healthcare, culture, industry, education and tourism. It has exclusive competence in the areas of customs union, competition and some common policies. Other areas have shared competence (which means Member States can act if the EU has chosen not to). These areas include social policy, agriculture, consumer protection, transport and the environment. The UK has various opt-outs, including one in respect of laws on freedom, security and justice.

Anyone taking medication on a regular basis is at risk for over-paying. Your pharmacy will have little reason to suggest cost-saving measures. After all, that will affect their bottom line. It is up to you, the patient, to be pro-active in finding an affordable regimen of medications.

Here are the top 10 reasons why you may be paying more than you need to for medication:

1. You don’t know your formulary. If you have insurance, you have a formulary, whether you know it or not. A formulary is a list of medications that your insurance covers at various price levels. Some medications will cost significantly more than others. Your doctor cannot be sure of prescribing a medication on your formulary unless you bring your list of formulary drugs along with you to your doctor appointment.

2. You don’t know your options. There are always options. Although your doctor may suggest only one, when cost is a concern be sure to ask about less expensive options as well as the pros and cons related to each one. You may find that the so-called best choice costs 5 times as much for a 5% greater benefit.

3. You started on a medication that has suffered price increases. It’s not uncommon for a doctor to start a patient on a cost-effective medication, only to find years later that the cost has increased considerably. Though initially it may have cost lost than a competing drug, with time the ‘playing field’ changes. Costs may increase and other drugs may go generic. If you find you are paying more and more, ask your doctor about changing your medication. Pharmaceutical manufacturers are well aware that if they can get patients started on their drugs, they are likely to continue them, even if the price increases considerably.

4. You continue on a brand name medication when a generic becomes available. Although insurance companies usually bring this to your attention, you may accidentally be taking a brand-name medicine even though a generic exists. As long as you’re willing to pay, your pharmacy may not point this out either. If you’ve been on a medication a long time, it doesn’t hurt to ask your pharmacist whether there might be a generic available or on the horizon.

5. You go to a pharmacy with a higher mark-up. Pharmacies purchase medicine at wholesale prices, but charge their customers the retail price. The pharmacy has the right to mark up their drug as much as they wish, which sometimes makes a significant difference in what you pay – easily $20 on a brand-name drug, from one pharmacy to the next. Price-shopping is the key to finding the lowest price.

6. You don’t buy in bulk. It’s almost always cheaper to buy a three-month supply of a drug rather than buy a one-month supply three separate times. Pharmacies charge a dispensing fee to prepare your bottle of medicine. You’ll pay this fee three separate times if you purchase your medicine monthly rather than in three-month allotments.

7. You’re taking a more expensive dosing regimen. For example, many drugs are cheaper to take a higher dose once a day than a lower dose twice a day. Also, the most commonly used dosage strengths are usually the least expensive, regardless of dose. Ask your pharmacist if there is any way to change your dosing schedule to decrease your cost.

8. You’re taking a ‘cadillac’ drug when a ‘pick-up’ would do as well. Doctors are often encouraged to use the latest and best, even though yesterday’s best is nearly as good as today’s. Ask your physician if an older remedy might be worth trying first.

9. You’re taking medicine you don’t need. Just because you required a medicine 5 years ago does not necessarily mean you need it today. Ask your doctor to re-evaluate your entire medication regimen. This may take a good 15 minutes to discuss, so don’t try to tack it on at the end of a visit, when it’s not likely to be addressed thoroughly. You would be better off making a separate appointment for the single reason of reviewing your medication options. Even if this costs you $100, you could easily make up that difference in a month or two of taking less expensive medications.

10. You’re taking a higher dose of medicine than required. Again, although you may have needed a certain strength of medication initially, as your disease comes under better control you may actually require less. A good example of this is asthma controller-medication, such as inhaled steroids.

Giving some thought to your medication is a good place to start. Learn the cost of each medication before discussing it with your doctor. Anyone taking more than one or two medicines is likely to find some way to trim at least several dollars a month from their medication bill, easily amounting to a hundred dollars a year.
