Basic Survival Food Storage On a Budget

[ad_1]

If you have not stored up food and water for an emergency or a disaster, this article could be a lifesaver for you and your family.

Is your reason or excuse for not being prepared the same one used by well over 300 million other Americans? The two most widely claimed excuses are, procrastination and finances, then there’s those with their heads in the sand or cyber clouds. Oh, almost forgot the 60+% that truly believe there is no reason what so ever to prepare period. Disasters? Those things happen anywhere but here in my backyard and besides, I’ll worry about it when it happens.

If you’re in the “not likely will happen” camp, you must be or were living in the outback with no connection to the outside world. It’s no longer a matter of what the disaster will be but rather when one will occur. As I’m writing this article Hurricane Harvey is bearing down on South Texas, and many coastal residents interviewed by news reporters, expressed doubt regarding the severity of the storm and the media’s expressed urgency regarding immediate evacuation of the coast. If my memory serves me correctly, it is the very same scenario regarding skeptics of Katrina’s forecast, resulting in 1,800 deaths.

Most Americans are oblivious about the plethora of pending disasters unrelated to predictable weather conditions such as hurricanes, tornados, rain and snow storms, floods, and even droughts can be forecasted. Recently Geologists are reporting earthquake activity across the entire country with tremors recorded from all major faults. There are over 400 tremors recorded daily in a 400-sq. Mile area of one of the largest dormant volcanos in the world, Yellowstone National Park. Now, not so dormant according to volcanologists. Most of this information is withheld or suppressed to prevent major panic in the affected regions. Such as the fact that Mt. Rainer is also active and swelling as did Mt. St. Helen before its eruption, however, the experts say it will be five times worst because of the lava cork holding back a potential early eruption. National Geographic has produced a video depicting the potential destruction of such an event, and a similar documentary on the potential destruction of Yellowstone’s super volcano.

Much talked about in the past regarding the San Andres Fault as a major threat to millions of Californians. However, a discovery has taken precedence. The New Madrid Fault is not new, to Geologist who have studied this area around the Mississippi and Ohio rivers for decades. Recently, unprecedented activity has sparked such a concern that it’s potential for destruction could be ten times worse than San Andres fault. Based upon geologic predictions, the US Navy has drawn up new water navigation maps of the US predicting the resulting math which depicts a resulting shipping lane from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Michigan following the current course of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.

Why can’t these findings and predictions be shared the news media? A major reason is their intrinsic irresponsibility, hype, drama, and exaggeration of pending events. What would be the results of a major panic of a vast sector of the population? If the results were vast migrations out of an affected area, where would they go, or more accurately, where could they go?

Another natural disaster that has the potential of eradicating over two-thirds of this countries population is an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) from a sun flare or a neutron bomb detonated 30-40 miles above the US on either the east or west coast. Most American do not have a clue what an EMP is until it shuts down the grid- and they are in darkness for months or even years. An EMP attack also disables everything with electronic circuitry like cell phones, computers, cars, planes trains, boats, etc. Welcome back to the horse and buggy era.

What I have given as samples to this point are enough to end civilization as we know it and yet I have not talked about the imminent collapse of our dollar and economy, civil war or WW-III, a major pandemic or terrorist attack.

How many more possibilities need I mentioned before I sound like a Doomsday profit or Fear Porn Purveyor or Monger. O, fine, pick just one! Then ask yourself this simple question, “Do I have enough food to last me at least one month?” Do you believe the grocery store will have any food left after one day following a major disaster? If it is a prolonged disaster, will you survive two or three months? What about protecting what you do have from looters and those that wish to do you great bodily harm to attain what you have? How long will the food you now have in your cupboards last? Water? What about when the water stops flowing from your taps? Three to 4 days without water, your no more!

If it were possible to know you only had 1-2 weeks to collect enough food to last three years, do you have the means or knowledge to know how to do so? Well, that is exactly why I’m writing this article, to tell you how to accomplish this.

For just $109.00 and a seven gal bucket with n air-tight, water-tight lid, you can have enough healthy food that will store easily for 15-20 years and provides two generous meals per day ($0.14 per meal) 50-lbs of long grain rice and 45-lbs of Pinto beans. (From Costco or other warehouse store or food club). Now all you need is pots and a wood camping stove or Solar Sun Oven and utensils. Last but not least, either water or a device that will purify polluted water.

So you don’t go crazy eating plain beans and rice, stock up on a large variety of spices and cans of tuna, chicken, beef, Spam, etc. to add more protein and variety to the beans and rice meals.

Pollution & Professional Exposures For HVAC Contractors

[ad_1]

While HVAC Contractors are traditional contracting risks, they have become the focus of growing pollution related claims over the last several years. HVAC system installation, maintenance, and repair can create pollution conditions such as poor indoor air quality and mold. Daily jobsite operations could disturb in-place asbestos, lead, or other contaminants. Materials and equipment brought to the jobsite may spill or leak while in transit or in use during contracting activities.

HVAC Contractors also have professional liability exposures which may not be obvious to the insured since contracting is the main focus. E&O claims could arise from: (1) jobsite modifications in which malfunctions may create a direct professional responsibility for the contractor, (2) supervision of subcontractors, and (3) actual design work performed, specifically when the contractor has a perceived responsibility to comment on design aspects that he knows to be poorly developed.

The exposures described above are usually excluded from General Liability policies, so it is important for HVAC contractors to have comprehensive coverage that will protect them from potential claims and thus help secure the future of their businesses. Beacon Hill’s programs division, PartnerOne Environmental, has a number of products that can effectively address the coverage needs of this class of business:

Contractors Pollution Liability

Contractors Pollution Liability insurance (CPL) is coverage designed to protect from third party claims for damages caused by “Pollution Conditions” arising from the insured’s covered operations. This coverage is applicable to all types of tank contractors and is important because these pollution claims may not be covered via the General Liability form.

How does Contractors Pollution Liability coverage work?

· Generally designed to address the coverage gap created by the CGL pollution exclusions.

· Policies usually written to provide coverage for operations performed “by or on behalf” of the insured.

· Coverage is provided for the insured’s operations away from their own premises.

· Base policies can be written on either a Claims Made or an Occurrence basis.

· Mold coverage is usually offered as an endorsement to the CPL insurance policy or coverage part.

· Mold is usually on a Claims Made form.

· Mold coverage may have a sub limit of liability, as well as its own deductible.

Contractors Pollution Liability/E&O

The Contractors Pollution Liability/E&O policy provides coverage to general contractors, construction managers, and various trade contractors who could potentially have both Pollution and Professional claims; Contractors Pollution Liability/E&O provides coverage for Professional exposures for contractors. This coverage is important because these professional exposures are generally excluded from General Liability and monoline Contractors Pollution Liability policies.

Job site modifications made

HVAC contractors are often presented with installations that do not work exactly as planned. In these situations, contractors will often tweak the plan at the site to make the system work. Pollution conditions arising from these changes create a direct professional responsibility for the contractor.

Actual design work performed

Many firms provide true design services as part of their corporate profile. This can range from doing all of the design work for the project, doing some design work relative to an aspect of the HVAC system, or simply having a perceived responsibility to comment on design aspects they know to be poorly thought out. The last element is the most difficult to control and manage for HVAC firms.

Supervision of subs

Proper selection and supervision of subcontractors is a professional exposure most contractors share that is generally excluded from CGL and basic CPL policies. Many HVAC contractors do not use subs at all, so this will not be an issue for them. For those that do however, the exposure can be significant

Small Fridge – It Can Have Disadvantages

[ad_1]

A small fridge can certainly come in handy sometimes. When you work at a job where you need to pack a lunch or maybe you just like to travel and want to bring food and drinks along, a mini fridge can help keep your food cold and keep it from perishing. Of course there are also certain disadvantages of a small fridge. The most obvious one is that it is so small in size.

Compared to the average refrigerator the basic mini fridge is about 1/10th the size. This means you are not able to hold even remotely the same amount of food and drink in this little fridge. Most of the time you do not need to worry about packing so much in a mini fridge so this should not always be a big problem.

The storage space is limited but if you take a look around at the different models on the market today you should find one that is spacious enough. You can find some models so small they barely hold a gallon of milk while others can contain an entire 24 pack of beer no problem. It depends entirely on what you plan to use the fridge for.

Temperature features are another issue with most mini fridges. On a standard refrigerator there are typically options for turning the freezer and refrigerator sections up and down with a temperature thermostat located inside. With the mini fridges however, this is usually not an option. If you take a look in any portable fridge you will see that there are no fancy features. You open the tiny door, a light comes on, and your food and drinks are kept inside cold. That is pretty much it. Of course you cannot expect too much from a fridge of this size.

Most small fridges do not come with a freezer section which is a third disadvantage. If there is meat or cold slushie drinks you want to keep frozen, this may not be an option. Available are some slightly larger and more expensive versions that come with a tiny freezer area but you will need to look specifically for this.

For some people a small fridge works and for others it does not. Portable fridges are definitely handy in the right situations.

Social Skills Training and ADHD Inattentive

[ad_1]

Children with Predominantly Inattentive ADHD (ADHD-PI, also known as ADD), have difficulty with social skills. These children tend to lack assertiveness and frequently have difficulties in social situations that require interactions with more than one person or with people that they do not know. They sometimes have problems with a sluggish cognitive tempo which may awkwardly delay their response to social interactions These kids may also be perceived by their peers as being as self centered and egotistical because they can appear standoffish as a result of their inattentiveness.

The good news is assertiveness and social skills can be taught. Extensive research has been done of teaching social skills to children with ADHD. Children with Combined type (ADHD-C) and Hyperactive Impulsive ADHD (ADHD-HI) need training in cooperation, self control, and empathy. Children with ADHD-PI need help with assertiveness, appearing approachable, and simple communication. Studies have shown that social skills’ training is extremely effective in improving communication, assertiveness, empathy, and social interactions. More importantly these studies have shown long term benefits in improving the school experience of children with ADHD.

I found two studies that looked at social skills training in children with ADHD-PI. It seems that children with ADHD-PI are helped more by social skills training programs that children with combined type ADHD or children with ADHD and co-morbid Oppositional Defiance Disorder.

The first study performed on 59 children at the Children’s Hospital-Boston found that children with ADHD-PI were helped more with social skills training than were children with the combined type of ADHD. The children received 8 weeks of social skills training after which; “Children with ADHD-I improved in assertion skills more than children with ADHD-C.”

The second study is ongoing and is taking place in Berkley. Researchers at the University of California are conducting a longitudinal study of children with ADHD-PI. They are using a tool called the Child Life and Attention Skills Program (CLAS) to teach ADHD-PI children and parents both attention skills and social skills. The researchers are still recruiting participants but the first set of results, published a few years ago, concluded that; “Children randomized to the Child Life and Attention Skills Program were reported to have significantly fewer inattention and sluggish cognitive tempo symptoms, and significantly improved social and organizational skills, relative to the control group.” If you happen to live in the San Francisco area, you can contact the Department of Psychiatry at UC Berkley here to participate in this study.

Children with ADHD are generally aware of social cues. They do not need to be taught to ‘read’ people’s reactions to them. Being unaware of social cues is one of the hallmarks of children and adults with Asberger’s syndrome but it is generally not a problem for children with ADHD. Children with ADHD-C and ADHD-HI have difficulty with self control but are still aware of the social impression that they are making. Children with ADHD-PI are often keelnly aware of their social awkwardness and tend to avoid situations that will cause them to be embarrassed.

The social skills training tools that have worked the best to train children with ADHD include exercises that break down complex social situations into smaller components and train, one at a time, each component of the social interaction. Role playing games are helpful as is modeling which involves having the child watch a model exhibiting the desired behavior. Social skills’ training is generally a family affair. Parents, siblings, and other family members are encouraged to participate in the training and role playing, provide encouragement to the children in training, and to help reinforce the behaviors that are being trained.

In conclusion, social skills’ training has proven to be extremely beneficial in improving the self confidence and school experience of children with ADHD. This training may be especially useful to children with a diagnosis of ADHD Predominantly Inattentive.

Aerial Installation: Playing It Safe

[ad_1]

There are many ways for you to install a television antenna, there are many techniques and ways to get the job done too, but also keep in mind that not every single method may work for your benefit. Installing an antenna can be a simple matter for people who are in the know and at the same time, it can be also very difficult for the people who have no experience whatsoever. Before the aerial installation can take place, the first thing that needs to be considered is the antenna itself. Many people are so excited to buy an antenna that they choose whatever they want at first and then end up wasting money because that type would never work on his or her location. This is the reason why you need to play safe whenever you want to get an aerial installation.

Not just any method or way works for installing an antenna, as mentioned earlier, the antenna can be quite hard to install if you do not know what you are doing. The antenna is also very delicate and you might end up breaking it or damaging it if you will not handle it properly. You cannot just simply put it on the side of your house or even tie it up on a tree and then expect that it will work beautifully. A good reason to play it safe when you want to get an antenna installed is that it may cost you a lot of money when you do it carelessly. Picking the wrong antenna will cost you, damaging your roof during the installation will cost you as well.

Installing an antenna requires finesse and care, you will have to be very careful that during the installation, you will not damage the roofing and create holes or puddles that will require you to spend more money for repairs afterwards. Installing the antenna requires a big amount of expertise and if you are not careful or if you totally do not know anything about it, you will definitely end up doing the same simple job over and over again and this can be quite tiresome and at the same time it can also be quite a chore. Trial and errors may lead to more damage and when you are up to your neck with trying to get the signal, you may end up giving up and scrapping the project.

Another reason why you need to play it safe is because installing an aerial installation may cost you your life and your health. There have been tons of reports about accidents such as falls and electrocutions when people carelessly do the job on their own. As you can see, always think things thoroughly before you decide on what action to take, safety must always be a priority and always keep in mind, some things are worth paying for because some things are not worth risking your life.

Moving Tips: Getting Help With Moving

[ad_1]

Every single year more and more people are moving to new homes. In the US alone there are millions of families moving. If you are moving because your company is relocating, then you’re in luck because your move is organized and paid by your company.

However if you’ve just left your job in pursuit of a better one, or you’re moving out from your parents home, then you have the entire moving burden on your shoulders. But don’t despair, because there are lots of places to get help for your move, and this article will show you a couple of great resources that you can use.

There are many great resources for people who are in need of moving, offering various things for free that you will need. For example did you know that you can get free maps, relocation guides, addresses of quality real estate companies and several How To guides that can be quite handy for your move? So here are some of the most popular resources that you can check out right now as well.

The Chamber of commerce is a great place to get maps as well as relocation guides. They either provide this to you for free or for a very small, nominal fee. You can get great information about the city you are relocating to, about the facilities, the educational system, even the type of churches available near your location. You can even get some useful checklists that you can use for your own move.

AMSA is the American Moving And Storage Association. They are an organization including over 3000 moving companies of high professional caliber that you can contact with confidence. If you check out the association’s website, you will find several How To guides specifically catering to your relocation needs. Also something I used once was a moving countdown calendar with a sixty day timetable that you can use day by day to get ready for the move. Very useful calendar!

AMSA in addition includes a list of CMCs (certified moving consultants) which are sales people who are experts at moving, as they have taken and passed a certification exam. Not only that but to show that they are serious about their business and not only some scam artists, they are paying every single year a fee as well as re-take the certification exam with new updated information that they need to know.

The website of AMSA is moving.org and you can check it out and download all the free material even before you visit their offices. This is an official organization sanctioned by the US government.

How to Combat Your Clutter

[ad_1]

What is clutter? For starters, clutter is just the general accumulation of junk; items that you have chosen to stow away or place in a general area. Some people may consider this storage; however, it becomes clutter when that room or area has no other purpose than for allowing your stuff to collect dust. If you are running out of walking room in your house, garage or basement, then you may have a problem with clutter. It isn’t always your fault and its nothing to be ashamed of because we are all guilty of it in some way, the issue becomes what do you do about it?

An operation that has been around for a long time, but only recently has it become a legitimate service, is that of your local hauling and junk removal operations. These companies in the past have been those operations that are run out of a pickup truck and operate under the motto that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” However, that assumption is false because there is a lot of work that goes into removing clutter and disposing of the contents responsibly. If you have a basement full of items, some heavy and some still useful, wouldn’t you want to be ensured those items are removed professionally and with respect to your home? Also, wouldn’t you like to know that those items are going to go somewhere other than the dump or your local junk man’s garage sale? Enter a professional junk removal company.

Companies that list themselves in the junk removal category, but are also revered as legitimate operations, will charge a fee to do all the heavy lifting associated with getting rid of your junk, while also finding responsible disposal solutions for your trash and waste. For example, if you had a garage that was mixed full of trash, construction debris with a few items that may still be of use, then you could call a junk removal operation. That company would then load all of those items into their dump truck and separate those items into piles of things that could be recycled, donated, reused and lastly, dumped. This service should cost a fee, but that fee should include the cost of the labor involved, taking the items to appropriate facilities, transfer stations and provide customer with a receipt. This is the typical ebb and flow of legitimate businesses and is now the standard for junk removal businesses.

So, now that we’ve addressed clutter and how to take care of the problem, let’s talk about how to choose the company to do it. In the technological age we live in, contractors are being held to a higher standard due to the variety of outlets that provide reviews. Always seek out a company that appears and presents itself as a legitimate operation and then go look for reviews and testimonials about that company. If you do that, you will be assured to have a smooth and pleasing experience the next time you need to get rid of clutter!

Knowing The Facts About In Home Senior Care Services

[ad_1]

Seniors who are strong enough to live on their own but not enough to perform certain household chores may be in need of in home senior care services. Most elderly individuals prefer to stay in a familiar environment for as long as they can because like most of us, they treasure their independence. This is why it is much easier for them to accept the idea of senior home care than nursing homes. Through some help from a home care provider, seniors can be easily kept in good condition making it possible for them to preserve their dignity and independence.

The cost of in home senior care services is also often less than that of full time nursing homes. This is why it may not be necessary to relocate your senior parents to a nursing home, especially if their condition isn’t serious enough.

There are at least two main types of in home senior care services, namely skilled or custodial care and supportive or unskilled care.

Skilled services are those provided by medical professionals, and these include nursing care, occupational, physical, speech and respiratory therapy, hospice care, social services. A qualified home health aide may also provide personal care to seniors during a limited period of time, provided that he follows a certain care plan and he works under the direct supervision of a skilled professional such as a nurse or a therapist. Skilled services are often not provided on a regular basis. The skilled providers have a programmed home visits to their clients based on a treatment plan prescribed by a doctor. Some of the reasons for hiring skilled services are to speed up hospital discharges, prevent unwanted hospitalizations, and allow an elder to remain in his home while he’s recovering from a sickness or during an acute illness.

Meanwhile, supportive services are those provided by non-medical home caregivers. These home care providers offer help to seniors through such personal care as bathing, dressing, grooming, housekeeping, meal preparation, and shopping. Depending on the client or his family’s request, a home care provider can also provide assistance in ambulation and exercises, self-administered medications, and transportation to medical appointments. Custodial or supportive services can be scheduled depending on the need of the client. The services provided often differ in amount and frequency with some lasting from a few hours a week to twenty four hours, seven days a week. Supportive services are aimed at helping an aging person deal with his deteriorating abilities, preserve his independence, and prevent relocation.

Aside from ensuring that your senior loved one is properly cared for, in home senior care services ensure that he maintains enough interaction with the outside world as he grows old. This is important because many seniors who live very far from their family and friends who are not able to maintain regular interactions with other people tend to be isolated and lonely, which can sometimes lead to depression.

Both skilled and unskilled services are intended to provide care assistance to an elderly person right at his own home and often this is better option than institutional care. You can either obtain in home senior care services from a home care agency or hire a private caregiver directly, which is often the less expensive option and allow more possibilities for your participation in the decision making process. This can be the best choice provided that you exercise much persistence and put in more effort in the hiring process.

Although you have to pay for most of the senior home care services, there are some types of senior care and community services that are given for free or donated. If you’re a member of a particular church, for instance, some of your members may voluntarily offer their time to provide some amount of care to your senior parents. There are also government programs or health insurance that can provide assistance in paying for some particular home care services.

In home senior care services can be the best bet not only for elderly people but also for their loved ones. Senior home care is the less expensive choice than a full-time nursing facility. Although every family is unique and should decide on the best type of senior care for their elderly loved one, in home senior care services is usually the most affordable and effective option for many families.

Food Recruitment Agencies and How They Can Help

[ad_1]

Finding a job nowadays can be tedious especially if you’re looking one that meets your exact qualifications. Many jobseekers often end up working in jobs they’re not even trained to do. Worse, there are companies that no longer post job vacancies and instead turn to recruitment agencies to help them find workers. So how else can you start building your career in the food industry?

Many fresh graduates and professionals who are unemployed or want to change employers now turn to food recruitment agencies for help. These agencies can do a lot for them such as:

• Finding ideal jobs that match your qualifications, usually based on your educational background, related work experiences, skills, and training

• Prioritizing you for job vacancies offered by companies that also seek their assistance in finding ideal employees

• Assisting in examinations, interviews, and processing of papers

If you’re a jobseeker and want to ask a recruitment agency for help, you have to prepare all your requirements to avail of their services. Prepare your credentials so they can find a perfect job match for you.

Though food recruitment agencies can help you find the job you’re after, it doesn’t mean that they do this for free. You have to pay a certain amount of money required by them in order to process your application. However, expect to pay more when you apply for overseas jobs since they’re more expensive and employers are hard to find.

Food recruitment doesn’t only work for jobseekers but also for companies in the hospitality industry. Many companies seek the assistance of recruiters especially in helping them with the following:

• Finding ideal candidates for job vacancies

• Recommending applicants that best suit the qualifications required for their job vacancies

• Informing the general public of possible job openings in their respective companies

Among the companies that often seek help from recruitment agencies are those who are looking for chefs, bartenders, food servers, and others who’re willing to work in local and international hotels, resorts, amusement parks, world class restaurants, and food factories.

The benefits of working with food recruitment are endless. However, as a jobseeker or employer, you’re advised to be cautious in dealing with recruitment agencies. You have to find one you can work with for long term especially if you’re a business owner who needs regular employees to fill vacant positions in your company.

Nowadays, you can find many of these agencies scattered in your area and in the internet. Play it safe by looking for one that’s legit, credible, and with proven track record. Ensure that you’re dealing with a duly certified agency with a good reputation and excellent feedback.

Radon Alert When Buying A House

[ad_1]

If there isn’t enough to think of already when buying a new home, I don’t expect that you have considered the danger of Radon. Neither had I, until my solicitor brought it to my attention and I began to look into the matter in some detail.

So what is Radon, and where is it prevalent? Radon is a radio active gas that does occur naturally and is surprisingly the second biggest cause of lung cancer deaths in Great Britain, after cigarettes.

Large areas of the south-west of England are based on rock formations that contain and generate unusually large amounts of Radon. This can mean that the gas poses a potential hazard for property owners in many areas of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. So it makes sense if you are buying a house in these areas that you take precautions and consequently the problem can be eliminated.

Radon occurs naturally and it derives from decaying radium, which is itself a product of decaying uranium in the rocks and soil itself. In the south-west of England there is a band of rock that runs from near Taunton in Somerset, right down to Penzance in the west and beyond, but there are also many other areas at high risk in the south-west of England.

The gas can build up in houses to amounts in excess of what is called the “action level”, namely 200 Becquerels per cubic metre.

The good news is that there are ways to eliminate the Radon problem in domestic properties and it doesn’t cost a fortune to do so. These include inserting an underfloor sump from which the gas is then pumped away from the house. The average cost of this is around £1,000, or $1,750, and also by improving the ventilation under the floors, usual costs around £500 or $875. A simple Radon test pack costs around fifty quid. If you are considering buying a new house, or indeed an older property in the south-west of England it is a good idea to check whether these anti Radon measures are already built in. They often are in these areas, though you should still check to be safe.

And if you are selling a property in these areas it is as well to have checks carried out too, because high levels can hold up house sales, or you may be faced with a proportion of the sales total deducted and held in trust, until a result is known, and the problem rectified.

In Great Britain you can find further information of the Radon problem from the Health Protection Agency who publish a booklet entitled “Radon, a guide for homebuyers and sellers”, and you can obtain further information of this booklet at their website which is www. hpa.org.uk/radiation

This problem occurs in many parts of the world of course, and in many areas it is little thought of, never mind investigated and dealt with, so if you are buying a second property in an unusual area or country, it might be a good idea to ask your legal team to investigate the problem thoroughly before contracts are signed.
