Breeding Boas – Tips For Successful Brumation and Mating

To breed boas successfully you must be properly prepared.  In captivity snakes are generally prepared for breeding with a cooling period known as brumation. Similar to hibernation in mammals, brumation in reptiles is a period of dormancy during the colder winter months. Brumating snakes can eat during this period, but in general they won’t since the temperature is lower, they are less active (sometimes not moving for weeks or months) and digestion is difficult or impossible. Snakes will still drink during brumation so fresh water should always be provided. In captivity, a period of brumation is not essential to keep snakes healthy, but is required to induce breeding.

To prepare for this, feeding should be increased in the months leading up to brumation – typically August, September and October. This will ensure that your snakes are of a good weight for breeding, and is especially important for females. Your goal here is not to over feed, obesity is just as bad, if not worse, than being underweight. Rather, you wants your boas to be heavy and well rounded.

Feeding should then be stopped entirely in late October, or early November. A couple of weeks is needed to ensure that digestion is completed, and defecation has occurred. Any food remaining in the digestive system when the temperature is lowered can lead to illness and even death. If the snake does not defecate you can try to induce this by soaking it in luke warm water.

Once you are sure that the digestive tract is clear, and that your snakes are in prime health, you can reduce the temperatures for the brumation period.

What temperature for brumation?

The optimal brumation temperature and period differs from species to species. What works well for one species, could be severely damaging to boas from a different native climate.

Tropical boas, such as boa constrictors, usually do well with a night time temperature which slowly lowers to around 70 F, while keeping the daytime temperature around 85 – 90 F. With careful use of timers, a long, cool night can be controlled, while a short but still warm day helps to keep your boas healthy and maintain a resistance to parasites and disease.

For boas from temperate climates, such as the rosy boas, a cooler temperature in the high 50s F can be maintained throughout the brumation period of around 3 months. This temperature is then raised back up to normal husbandry temperatures in March.

Exactly how to control your temperatures will depend heavily on your climate, where your enclosures are kept, and how they are heated. A certain amount of trial and error may be necessary to ensure that temperatures are controlled properly, and a mixture of heat sources, timers, and possibly air conditioning may be required. Use of digital thermometers with a high/low memory feature will allow you to keep a close eye on your temperatures, and if at all possible you should set up brumation enclosures as a trial before introducing your boas.

Following these guidelines will give you a good chance of successfully breeding your boas. After a successful mating, the key to successfully raising the neonates is proper preparation. Ensure that you are well prepared for the care requirements, both of the gravid female, and the neonates after birth, and you’ll enjoy the wonder of breeding boas!

Condensation and Surface Temperatures

If all the other factors remain the same, any improvement in the thermal insulation of your house will result in higher surface temperatures and consequently reduce the risk of condensation.

Pitched roofs Installing (or adding) to the insulation on the loft floor is certainly one of the most effective ways of saving money on heating bills. This will avoid condensation on the underside of upper-floor ceilings but may dramatically increase the possibility of condensation in the loft space particularly if the loft hatch and holes down to the house are not well sealed and spaces are not left at the eaves.

Insulating materials such as mineral wool, preferably about 100mm thick, can be laid between the joists. The insulation must be laid evenly between the joists with no gaps and must be taken down to the eaves to cover the wall head, while ensuring that ventilation openings are not blocked.

As improving the insulation of the ceiling will make the roof space colder, the movement of moist air from the house into the roof space must be kept to a minimum. Gaps in the ceiling – around pipes, cables, and so on – must be sealed as well as possible. The roof (loft) hatch should also be sealed and fitted with a catch to prevent movement. As long as you have had no previous serious problems with condensation in your roof space, the above precautions should be sufficient. However, if condensation occurs, you will have to improve the ventilation in the roof space by providing ventilation openings at the caves if they are not already there. Or add roof tile and ridge ventilators and air bricks in gable end walls.

If you insulate your loft, you should also insulate the cold water cistern and all pipes.

Flat roofs (bitumen felt or metal covered)

Although improved insulation may be possible, how it should be done depends on the type of roof. Repair or renewal of existing roofs should be of the over-deck insulated type.

External walls

You can increase the insulation properties of a wall by apply¬ing extra insulation material to the inside or outside surface of the wall or within the wall itself. As a d-i-y task, fitting internal linings is the most practicable. Cavity wall insulation has to be left to specialist contractors (except when building a new house) and insulating the outside of wall involves a considerable number of alterations.

A lightweight lining built on to the inside of a masonry wall produces a surface which warms up and cools down considerably faster than the wall itself -so the temperature of the surface directly in contact with the air is more able to keep in step with the air temperature in the house. This will considerably reduce the risk of condensation if your house is intermittently heated – unoccupied during the day with little or no healing on followed by very large moisture and heat inputs during the early evening.

A plasterboard lining is generally sufficient to prevent surface condensation on a cavity wall but insulating plasterboard is preferable for a solid wall.

When you build on a lightweight wall lining you must provide a vapor cheek to restrict the flow of water vapor through the wall so that condensation within the wall is kept to the minimum. This can be achieved either by using a special vapor check board or by stapling a separate sheet of polythene to the timber battens holding the board to the wall.

You can also improve the condensation resistance of a cavity wall by sticking insulating material directly to the inside surface of the wall. The insulating material can be rolls of thin polystyrene which will warm the wall surface but will add very little to its insulation. A dis¬advantage of thin polystyrene is that it dents easily; more substantial wall insulating material will not only not dent but will add significantly to the insulation of the wall while stopping condensation.

Cold bridges

These occur when the thermal insulation of small areas of a wall is considerably lower than the wall which surrounds them. Typical cold bridges are window lintels and solid columns forming part of a wall. Condensation prob¬lems on cold bridges can seldom, if ever, be satisfactorily prevented by adjusting the heat input, ventilation or moisture production. Remedial treatment is generally necessary.

The easiest way to overcome a cold patch on a wall is to stick insulation over it. Choose a type of insulation which is not permeable to water vapor. It may be possible to hide the insulation in the plaster finish. However, in many instances, techniques similar to those described for improving wall insulation will have to be used to obtain a pleasant and satisfactory wall finish.

Windows Condensation on the glass of single-glazed windows can be overcome by installing double glazing. However, in many eases condensation will still occur on metal window frames. Double glazing at present is barely cost effective as far as fuel saving is concerned, but when window frames have to be replaced then double-glazed windows should be considered.

While double glazing will almost certainly reduce the condensation level on the glazing, it may well increase condensation elsewhere. The reason for this is simple: modern double-glazing systems especially high-performance replacement windows are an extremely effective method of draught proofing and, when used to replace a leaky single-glazed window, may simply move the condensation problem somewhere else, typically a cold outside wall.

Be Generous with Human Interaction–Making a happy home for this parrot means dedicating several hours of your day each day to interact with your bird. This can include talking, petting, training, or just hanging out together as you read, pay bills, watch TV, or work at your laptop. Scheduling this time every day will increase the level of trust between bird and owner, and will help your bird remain tame and relaxed around you and other family members.

To our modern society plastic is one of the most useful and versatile inventions. Everyday, practically everything we touch, eat or drink, involves some sort of plastic. We buy our food in plastic bags and containers, we buy drinks and water in plastic jugs and bottles. Many of us use plastic plates and cups at home and store our leftovers in plastic containers. We wrap things in plastic wrap. We use plastic baggies for a variety of things. Plastic protects our phones, our books and important papers. Plastic lines the inside of canned foods for protection. Plastic has many useful applications not just for our homes but also major industries as well. Medicine, computers, chemistry, culinary, dentistry, agriculture, the list goes on and on. Plastic has revolutionized our society.

Too much of a good thing is actually affecting our health. Have you ever tried to go a day without coming into contact with plastic? It is almost impossible. Plastic is a polymer, meaning a bunch of the same molecules loosely strung together with weak chemical bonds. This allows some of the molecules to break off. All of our exposure to so much plastic is starting to interfere with our hormones. Many types of plastics have a “Xeno-estrogenic” effect in excess. Once we get too much in our bodies we can begin to see hormonal imbalances in women and men that look like excess estrogen. This can have many negative effects especially on fertility, menstruation, growth and development, and overall health and well being. Xenoestrogens disrupt our normal endocrine system and in women it has been implicated in breast cancer, endometriosis, and can even disrupt neural signaling during fetal growth. For men, xenoestrogens have an effect on testicular function, spermatic concentration, growth and motility. Environmentalists are even seeing a trend in the fish due to so many xenoestrogens from our waste water getting into streams. Male fish are showing partial and compete sex reversal to female fish. Some parts of the oceans are so over run with plastic waste that it is displacing animals from their homes. Marine animals and fish are ingesting plastic or getting it stuck in and around their bodies causing severe deformities, inability to feeds and death.

The most important exposure that we have control over is using plastic for food and water. Heating food in plastic containers is one of the worst ways to contaminate our food and bodies. The heating of the food in plastic allows the molecules to break off more easily. Frozen vegetable packs that advertise putting the packs in the microwave to “steam” in the bag, frozen meals in plastic trays and pouches, and putting hot cooked food into a plastic container for storage or covering it with plastic wrap are all ways the plastics can adversely affect our health. Drinking water in plastic bottles also allows the harmful chemicals such as bisphenol-a, Polychlorinated biphenyl and phlalates to leach into the water as they can leach into food.

What can you do about it? Try to use as little plastic as possible in your daily life. Use Pyrex or other types of non plastic containers for food storage and heating. Drink water out of glass or stainless steel bottles. Use your own cloth grocery bags and produce bags instead of using the plastic ones. Limit or avoid frozen meals and processed foods. Don’t microwave or heat anything that is plastic. Try to eat as little canned food as possible. By implementing these simple easy changes it will not only help your own health but the health of the planet as well.

Dog Training – The MUTT Method, A Fool Proof Plan For Changing Your Dog’s Behavior

Dog owners are sometimes faced with a behavior problem and don’t know how to deal with it. In my book, “The Amazing Dog Training Man,” I came up with an acronym that anyone can use as a tool to understand and deal with any behavior problem.

Here is how you can use The M.U.T.T. Method to deal with any behavior problem.

M – Manage. The first step in dealing with any behavior problem is to properly manage the behavior. Management of behavior will not fix the problem, it will just help contain the problem. For instance, house training will not be fixed by using a crate but it will definitely help manage the behavior. A muzzle can help manage a dog that is being aggressive towards other dogs. So the first step is to think about managing the behavior.

U – Underlying. Every behavior problem has an underlying reason. You need to figure out what the underlying reason is. Say your dog has a digging problem. Why is the dog digging? Is it frustration, boredom, breed specific, etc. Let’s say you are having a house training problem. Is your dog stressed for some reason, is there a health problem, and so on. Once you figure out the underlying problem you can move on to the next part of the M.U.T.T. Method…

T – Train. Now that we have the behavior managed and we have figured out the underlying problem, we can start to train the dog. Let’s go back to the digging for a moment. If the dog is digging because of frustration we can remove the frustration and give the dog some other activities. If the dog is digging because it’s breed specific (terriers live to dog) then we can teach the dog to dig in a designated area and so on.

T – Time. Once we have started to train a new behavior we need to be patient and give it some time. The behavior experts say that it takes at least 21 days to learn a new behavior. So as your going through the process be patient and stick to the plan.

Behavior problems can be difficult do deal with sometimes. When you understand why the behavior is happening and what you can do about it, the problem is much easier to deal with.
