Joe Jordan – The Original ‘Hand Of God’

The Wales national football team don’t have the greatest history as a far football is concerned, they have only qualified for one World Cup Finals in 1958, where they were beaten 1-0 in the quarter finals, by the eventual winners Brazil.

In 1977 Wales played Scotland in a World Cup qualifying match, which, had they won, would have seen Wales reach the World Cup Finals in Argentina in 1978. A hand ball by Joe Jordan was to prove a decisive factor in the game, which Scotland won.

Even before the game, Wales were to lose their home ‘advantage’ when the fixture was re-scheduled to be played at Anfield, England, rather than in Wales at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground. This followed the Football Association of Wales’ decision to move the game to secure a larger crowd and to make more money. A huge number of Scottish fans attended the game, far more than would ever have been possible at Wrexham, which created a very hostile atmosphere for the Welsh players who were also playing on an unfamiliar pitch.

The game itself remained goalless until, in the 78th minute, came the fateful moment for Wales following an incident with Scotland’s Joe Jordan

The Scotland striker, Jordan, jumped with Wales defender David Jones to challenge for a long throw-in into the Welsh penalty area, with Jordan then deliberately punching the ball towards the Welsh goal, to the astonishment of the Welsh fans and players, the French referee Robert Wurtz awarded a penalty. Television replays clearly showed it was Jordan’s and not Jones’ hand that had touched the ball, but the referee had made his decision.

Scotland’s Don Masson scored the penalty, which broke Wale’s hearts, and with minutes remaining as Wales pushed forward in search of an equalising goal, Kenny Dalglish scored a second goal and the Wales dream was over and it was Scotland who would go to the World Cup finals.

Prior to the game everyone in the Wales was talking about Argentina and the World Cup finals and many still feel upset about the incident to this day.

To rub salt into the Welsh wounds, Joe Jordan refuses to own up to his handball and has never apologised.

Diego Maradona was famously involved in a handball incident in the 1986 World Cup when he scored a goal against England, and then claimed it was the ‘hand of God’ that had intervened.

More recent ‘handball’ incidents include that of Thierry Henry in the qualifying game against Ireland for the 2010 World Cup Finals, which have now eclipsed Wales’ injustice, and while Joe Jordan has made never made any claims of divine intervention, he will be fortunate to find any Wales supporters who will forgive him easily.

Composting Toilets in Ireland

Flushing toilets is the single highest use of household hold drinking water in Ireland. The average Irish person flushes the toilet 5 times a day using 30 litres of water. In a rural setting all this waste must be treated and disposed of on site. But, technology exists that is capable of dealing with human waste without using water. Therefore no septic tank is required. So with septic tank inspections and charges on the horizon it pays to use a composting toilet.

In 2005 the European court of justice ruled that Ireland had infringed the Waste Framework Directive by “generally and persistently failing to fulfill it’s obligation to fulfill various articles under that Directive”. Septic Tank charges and inspections are due to commence in early 2013. According to the Irish onsite wastewater association (IOWA) there are approximately 400,000 onsite waste water treatment systems in Ireland and anecdotal evidence suggests that approximately 70% of them are not functioning correctly. This means that many septic tanks will need to be upgraded.

This change in legislation provides us with an opportunity to change the way we deal with human waste in Ireland. Composting toilets or incinerating toilets use no water, so no septic tank is required. The technology has been tried, tested and certified for residential use. There are no odors and the compost, or ash, is safe to place in the garden.

Composting toilets break down waste in the presence of air, moisture and microbes to produce safe finished compost. Both solid and liquid waste are collected in the composting toilet. Urine is absorbed by the compost and excess liquids are evaporated off using a gentle heating element. Odors are controlled by the fan that expels air out of the building and there is no liquid outlet required on electric units. By rotating the Bio-Drum the mix remains aerated so that fouls smells do not occur. It is due to this rotating Bio-Drum that the national sanitation foundation (NSF.org) have certified the Sun-Mar composting toilet for residential use. There are units for various capacities and units that do not need an electrical power supply.

Incinerating toilets incinerate all toilet waste into sterile ash. Using an incinerating toilet is easy. Place a disposable paper bowl liner in before each use. Both solid and liquid waste are collected in the incineration chamber. After use simply press the start button and the contents, including the toilet paper, are incinerated. Vapor is removed by a fan. Ash is removed from the ash pan once a week. Incinerating toilets are the most similar to a flush toilet in the way each user starts with a clean slate every time.

Waterless Urinals work by using a biodegradable oil based liquid trap to prevent odors coming from the drain. The urine flows through this oil layer while the oil always remains on to. There are no moving parts or rubber seals in the trap that may fail over time. The other difference between this and a conventional urinal is that the urinal must be sprayed every day to ensure that urine rolls off the urinal and does not adhere to it.

Oh! To Be In England

My earliest memory of drinking tea, was when I was a young girl and had been taken on a special visit to Lion’s Corner House in London. My eyes boggled at the site of cream cakes, piled high on a 3 tiered silver cake stand, and tiny sandwiches cut beautifully into all sort of shapes, just waiting to be devoured by my insatiable appetite. When the waitress came, dressed in her white starched cap and black dress, with a white lace pinafore, I sat very quiet and contemplated which cream cake I was going to have. Before I could get that far, however, there was a grown up discussion on what kind of tea we would drink. My Mother opted for English Breakfast, but my Grandmother decided we would have her favorite “Earl Grey”.

It is hard to imagine, at one time, tea was considered distasteful and unhealthy in England, and was also highly taxed, but Queen Elizabeth saw tea as a very profitable investment. She chartered the East India Co. in 1600 and granted it the monopoly of trade in the East. For over 250 years the company was a crucial player in the rise and fall of the British colonial empire.

The queen introduced tea as a breakfast drink to replace ale. The idea that tea could accompany food was quite abhorent to some, they even added salt and spices to it. The ignorant few, decided to chew on the leaves!. It wasn’t until the Duchess of Bedford devised a ceremony of tea in the middle of the eighteenth century, that tea became an English institution. By the end of the seventeenth century, tea was England’s national drink. Tea gardens abounded in many places, where the drink became an excuse to meet friends and maybe lovers!.

Until this time China had been England’s sole source for tea, but the East India co. discovered the Indian tea plant in the early eighteenth century, however obsession with growing Chinese tea was prevalent but China was not about to give away any secrets as to the propagation and drying methods that had been for centuries, kept behind the Great Wall. India tried to tell the company that their native herb was worth all the tea in China, but the company stubbornly insisted on planting the Chinese seeds.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the East India company had produced approx 170million pounds of tea, three quarters of which kept the English busy boiling water!!

During the early 1900’s something happened to change the way the Western world looked at tea. In 1904 the St Louis world’s fair took place on a very hot day in a humid summer. The producers of Indian tea had taken a booth to advertise their product, but no one seemed to be interested in the hot steamy drink, until someone poured the tea into a glass of ice, now people flocked to the stall to quench their thirst with this new concoction, and Americans still prefer their tea iced today.
