Gundagai, New South Wales – A Historic Town Along The River

Gundagai is a town in the Australian state of New South Wales located along the big Murrumbidgee River at the foot of Mt Parnassus. Just a stone’s throw away from the Muniong and Yambla Mountain ranges, Gundagai is popular for its old bridges, monuments, and memorials.

The town’s colourful history has made it a favourite topic of a number of poets, musicians, and writers. Some believe that one reason for this is because the Five Mile Creek north of Gundagai used to be a popular point of rendezvous among teamsters, drovers, shearers, and bush travellers.

Gundagai was first discovered by Australian-born Hamilton Hume and Briton William Hovell in 1824, when the Wiradjuri Aborigines dominated the area. Europeans first arrived two years later. In the 1830s, a village was formed until the Gundagau was gazetted as a town in 1840.

The town was ravaged by a flood in 1844 resulting in the deaths of around 83 people. A local Aborigine, Yarri, was commended for his heroism during the incident. He was among those who saved stranded residents using his bark canoe. A marble headstone was erected in his memory at the Gundagai cemetery where he was buried in 1880.

A 15-year gold rush swept the town in the 1850s before another “gold fever” resurfaced in 1894. The most famous historical mines include the Robinson and Rice’s Mine southwest of Gundagain and the Prince of Wales Mine a few mile west of the town.

Some of the most popular historical tales in Gundagai were of bushrangers who killed two policemen. The Ben Hall bushranging gang killed Sgt Edmund Parry while holding up a mail coach near Jugiong in the 1860s. Another gang led by “Captain Moonlite” killed Senior Constable Webb-Bowen during a hostage incident at a farm in 1879. The remains of the two policemen are interred at the Gundagai cemetery.

Must-See Places:

The Dog on the Tuckerbox bronze sculpture is perhaps the icon most closely associated with the town. It is situated across a restaurant and gift shop complex 8km north of the town on the Hume Highway. Opposite the Dog on the Tuckerbox, which is part of Australian folklore, is the Snake Gully Tourist Centre.

The Marble Masterpiece was completed by mason Frank Rusconi for 28 years. It is a miniature Baroque Italian palace standing 1.2 metres high within a formal square. Each of the 20,948 pieces of marble gathered throughout New South Wales was cut, turned, and polished by hand. The centre also featured a replica of St Marie’s Cathedral located in the outskirts of Paris.

The Gundagai Historical Museum displays old coins and crockery retrieved from the original townsite, which was ravaged by the flood. A T-model Ford, wagons, machinery and equipment, clothing, gold scales, and a sundial are among the collection.

The Gundagai Courthouse is one of the town’s oldest buildings. It was where “Captain Moonlite” was tried.

The Niagara Café is an old Greek restaurant established in 1942. It was once visited and commended by former Prime Minister John Curtin.

The Mt Parnassus peak has fine views of the town and river beds. Magnificent lookout spots also include the Rotary Lookout, Mt Kimo, and Reno.

I also find that certain incentive programmes work well here. Get the manager’s incentives based on Labour dollar saved and they come to understand the process.

12. Effectively manage your salary administration programs. Many companies pay lip service to this principle but failed to obtain true levels of success in salary administration and management. To start, make sure you have a salary range for every position in the company. Salaries should be structured so that the midpoint is 100, the minimum is 80% and the maximum is 120%. The basic philosophy is that the candidate should be hired into a position between the minimum and the midpoint on the basis of his or her level of experience. The employees are then moved higher in the range on the basis of performance. This philosophy is based on the premise that mid-point is the amount the position is worth to the company. Employees can obtain an additional 20% through stellar performance. Few employees should be paid over the 120% range. Each job is worth a specific amount to the organisation. If a new hire needs training to become efficient in a particular job, that employee is working at a level below the worth of the position and therefore should be paid at the minimum salary range. When the employee’s performance rises at successful completion of training and can perform 100% of the job duties move the employee quickly toward the midpoint of the salary range.

13. Insist that a salary survey be done every year to ensure that you have achieved the desired community position relative to your competition. In this case the competition is those companies that would recruit your employees. You need to make sure that if you survey 10 competitors; you have a salary range higher than 75% of these companies for your key positions and higher than 50% of these companies for lower-level positions. Implementing this strategy will help you reduce turnover and will also ensure that you are not overpaying for positions.

14. Make sure your salary administration program allows for regular salary review. Typically, this is done once a year for salaried employees and every six months for hourly employees. The review should include a performance appraisal form and the employee’s performance levels should correspond with established pay increases. In other words, establish the pay for your performance review system.

15. Establish a bell curve of salary increases. Let’s say that approximately 8% of your employees are superior performers, 12% are above average, 60% are average, 12% are fair, and 8% are poor. Create a salary increase guideline that mirrors this curve, with the better performing employees receiving higher increases. For example superior employees are given 6% to 7%, above average employees 4% to 5%, average employees 3%, fair employees 2%, and poor employees 0%. This allows the organisation to check and reward performance whilst still meeting its salary increase budget. Obviously, your goal is to continue to train and develop your workforce. Occasionally, low performing employees have to be replaced with those most suited to the position. The Bell curve is just a process to ensure that star performers are recognised and rewarded for their work.

16. Establish the salary increase guideline budget and stick to it. Plan salary increases for the coming year by using the Bell curve mentioned in the above idea. Department managers should budget salary increases for employees assuming that the next year’s performance will be at the same level as this year’s. Please be aware that some performance ratings will change. There will always be exceptions. This process will help ensure that your organisation will remain within the new salary increase budget.

17. The salary increase guideline budget should be preapproved. When a different rating is submitted during the year, treat it as an exception and make sure to justify it because performances can change- it may go up or down. A strict salary administration program will ensure that budgets are achieved.

18. Establish a training rate for all appropriate positions. This is crucial when your organisation experiences higher levels of turnover during the first and second months of employment. The training rate is lower than the standard pay rate and is applicable only during the training period. Employees are given a raise once the training has been completed satisfactorily. Determine whether the training rate could be established for other positions in the organisation.

19. Where the training rate is not appropriate, establish a probationary rate for the standard 90 day period. Barracuda BC-12 Mini Stun-Gun – Setting the Standard in a Competitive Industry

Since the launch of their very first model, Barracuda stun guns have set the standard for what we have come to expect from a self defense tool. These are by far the most reliable hi power non lethal self defense weapons on the market today.

The BC-12, 1.2 million volt mini stun gun, was introduced to the general public in November of 2007. The charger is built right in to the BC-12; you don’t have to worry about losing it. To charge the unit you simply slide the button on the bottom to expose the plug prongs and plug it in. The first time you charge the unit you want to charge it for around 12 to 15 hours and then once every six weeks or so for about an hour just to make sure you have the maximum charge. This model also features a wrist strap/safety disable pin which when disengaged, disables the unit. I really like this feature.

If for some reason you are overpowered while trying to use the unit and it is taken away from you, as long as you have the strap around your wrist or in your hand it cannot be used against you. A nylon holster is also included with this model. One thing to remember, if you use the holster be sure to place the unit in the holster firing end first, then fold the wrist strap across the top and close the flap. This will not only prevent you from losing the wrist strap, but will also ensure that when unit is removed from the holster the strap is readily available and the first thing in your hand.

With the success of the first model, and the constant demand for more power, the 1.8 million volt BC-18 was introduced. This model is identical to the BC-12 but with a lot more power. Just to here this model fired off will detour most assailants.

To make the product line complete Barracuda then released the 1 million volt BC-10. This model was designed for those who prefer the older, larger style stun gun. The unit is powered by two nine volt Eveready Alkaline batteries, and they do specify Eveready Alkaline batteries. These batteries will give you the maximum charge for full power. The batteries are very simple to install, just slide open the compartment on the bottom of the unit, snap them in, and you are ready to go.
