Cleaning Ugly Roof Stains
[ad_1]
Many things can stain your roof. Things such as moss, algae, and lichens, which feed off the organic material found in roof shingles. When this happens, it can cause ugly stains on your roof. In order to clean off this stains you can do it yourself or hire a professional roof cleaner. If you feel comfortable cleaning the roof yourself there are three main roof-cleaning methods that you can use.
Chlorine-bleach method
Many roof-cleaning contractors use this method. They mix chlorine beach in high concentrations with other chemicals like trisodium phosphates (TSP), which is an inorganic compound that is highly soluble in water and formulated for heavy duty cleaning. After spraying it on the roof, you let it dry but do not rinse it off. It can be reapplied as many times as needed. The moss, lichens, and stains do not come off the day the roof was treated but may eventually come off with the rain.
• Pros-it is less expensive than other methods because of the inexpensive chemicals and you do not have to get on the roof to inspect it or rinse it after applying it.
• Cons-it has a strong chemical odor and the roof is not cleaned immediately, especially if you are trying to remove lichen colonies and moss. It may also pose harm to pets and people if they are exposed to the mixture or fumes. There could be permanent damage to the landscaping because of the bleach running down on them.
Eco-friendly, low pressure, non-bleach method
These products used to clean roofs do not contain toxic chemical like phosphates or chlorine bleach that can kill vegetation and cause breathing problems if the fumes are inhaled. In addition, by using low-pressure rinsing there is less chance of damage to your roof that high pressure brushing or scrubbing could cause.
• Pros-the results with this method are typically complete and instant. If you hire a professional roof cleaner, they will use eco-friendly products like roof shampoo and equipment designed to give gentle, safe roof cleaning.
• Cons-it can cost more to hire professionals who use this method because the eco-friendly high quality products are more expensive. If you do it yourself and do not have a pressure washer, you will need to rent or purchase one.
High-pressure power washing method
This is when a high-pressure washer is used to clean your roof and can be done with eco-friendly products or the chlorine bleach method. Many professional roof cleaners use this method.
• Pros-there are none with this method.
• Cons-this is a method can cause extensive damage to your roof and is not an effective way to remove organisms. Algae will often return quickly to your roof.
